VENICE - Venice Middle School/Oak Park South held a Hispanic Heritage Celebration Oct. 11 throughout the campus. The event, held in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month (Sept. 15-Oct. 15) and Columbus Day (Oct. 11) was organized by the school's Spanish Language Department to promote learning about Spanish-speaking countries.
For the event, the gym was transformed into the Spanish-speaking world. Carlos Carrion, Spanish language teacher and soccer coach at the school and a native of Spain, directed his students to create posters, displays and presentations about Spanish-speaking countries.
All students in the school had the chance to "travel" from country to country. Each student was issued a passport, which was stamped at every country they visited. In one day, students could travel from Argentina to Spain, from Mexico to Costa Rica, from Cuba to Panama and beyond. History, culture and current events were showcased, including the trapped miners in Chile who were rescued later that week. Read more... |
