| District celebrates Arts in Education Week | |

SARASOTA COUNTY - Hundreds of teachers in Sarasota County schools tied arts into their classroom lessons during the week of Sept. 12-18, but not just because the U.S. Congress declared it Arts in Education Week. Throughout each day of the school year, educators in the district appreciate the value of the arts as an integral part of learning.
Examples of art in the curriculum in mid-September included illustration and music projects at Laurel Nokomis School in Nokomis and a Booker High Visual and Performing Arts dance class held at Siesta Public Beach in Sarasota. Read more...

| Principal, Assistant Principal of the Year selected | |
LEADERS OF THE YEAR: Laura Kingsley of Fruitville Elementary and Bill Massolio of North Port High have been named Principal of the Year and Assistant Principal of the Year, respectively, for the Sarasota County School District.
SARASOTA COUNTY - An elementary school principal and a high school assistant principal whose schools serve diverse populations have been named this year's top leaders in the Sarasota County School District. Laura Kingsley, principal of Fruitville Elementary School in Sarasota, was recently named Principal of the Year for the district by Superintendent Lori White. Bill Massolio of North Port High School was recognized as Assistant Principal of the Year.
"Laura and Bill are hard-working, creative administrators who help everyone at their schools do their best for students every day of the school year," said White. "We're very fortunate to have them on our team." Read more...

| NPHS culinary students to assist with Food Expo | |
COOKING UP CULINARY CAREERS: Students in the Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Program at North Port High School prepare for a lesson in the program's commercial kitchen. Twenty students from the program will be assisting chefs at the "Rising to New Heights" Food and Equipment Expo 2010 in Punta Gorda on Sept. 21. (Click here for full caption with names.)
NORTH PORT - Twenty students in the Commercial Foods and Culinary Arts Program at North Port High School will don their chef jackets and travel to Punta Gorda to volunteer their services for the "Rising to New Heights" Food and Equipment Expo 2010. The event will take place from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday, Sept. 21 at the Charlotte Harbor Event and Conference Center, 75 Taylor St., Punta Gorda. The students will attend the event with Culinary Instructor Robin Letourneau and Chef Instructor Witold Bielak.
The culinary students will have the opportunity to work directly with employees of U.S. Foodservice Tampa, the exposition's sponsor, and with chefs and vendors from around the state. The students will assist by prepping, cooking, serving, restocking and any other tasks necessary for the success of the event. Read more...

| Student mosaic to launch sister city project | |

SARASOTA - Sarasota County elementary and middle school students will be among the first to help forge a lasting bond between Sarasota and her new sister city of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico. Students at Englewood Elementary School are creating an eight-foot by 24-foot mosaic that will contain 12 panels depicting what it means to them to be a student in their school and a part of their community.
Sarasota Middle School students also will participate in the project by producing ceramic pieces and other artwork that will be exchanged with artwork by students in Merida and displayed in both cities.
The mosaic is scheduled to be on permanent display in the U.S. Consulate in Merida, Yucatan. Read more...
