Three Kinds of Encouragement "Encouragement is to children what water is to plants". This is one of Rudolf Dreikurs' famous quotes, and for me, a lovely way to remember how vital encouragement is. Encouragement:
- Notices effort and improvement, not just success
- Builds long-term self esteem and empowerment
- Is focused on the receiver, not the giver ("You figured it out", rather than "I'm glad you did it the way I showed you")
There are three wonderful ways to give encouragement:- Descriptive: Begins with the phrase, "I noticed", or "I saw". "I noticed you used your best penmanship on that note to Grandma".
- Appreciative: Starts with "Thank you. . ." or "I appreciate". "I appreciate the way you keep our agreement about taking out the garbage".
- Empowering: Expresses faith and belief. "I have faith in you to make that decision".
Encouragement is the language of love--may we all improve our fluency!
