Delightful Decembercardinal in pine bough

I'm writing this on Cyber Monday, realizing I have done absolutely NO online shopping today.  I think that is some sort of statement about my life, but I'm not sure what it is!  In recent years, my family has simplified the holiday season in an effort to reconnect with what is really important to us:  time together, shared experiences and memories.  We don't do a big gift exchange anymore, and have very few "must do" activities. I still have the largest collection of holiday music ever, and continue to enjoy decorating my house inside and out.  But I want those things--they aren't obligations that I dread and can't wait to get out of the way.

In this issue I write about one gift we can all give each other that doesn't cost anything, yet has so much value:  ENCOURAGEMENT.

Please check out the "Workshop Schedule" on my website.  I've started planning for 2011.  There is a 7-week class in late January, and if you refer someone to it, you are eligible for a deck of 52 Positive Discipline Tool Cards.  Also on the schedule is a Saturday morning workshop the last weekend of January, and a 2-day (plus 1.5 hours) train-the-trainer workshop in March.  All of these offerings are eligible for a $5 instant rebate if you bring in TWO non-perishable food items for StandUp For Kids.

Still having fun with the blog.  I hope you will read and post comments!

Happy end-of-year holidays to all of you.  My wish for us all is that we find joy, warmth, and love in each others' presence.

Love,
Linda

Three Kinds of Encouragement
"Encouragement is to children what water is to plants".  This is one of Rudolf Dreikurs' famous quotes, and for me, a lovely way to remember how vital encouragement is.  Encouragement:
  • Notices effort and improvement, not just success
  • Builds long-term self esteem and empowerment
  • Is focused on the receiver, not the giver ("You figured it out", rather than "I'm glad you did it the way I showed you")
There are three wonderful ways to give encouragement:
  1. Descriptive:  Begins with the phrase, "I noticed", or "I saw".  "I noticed you used your best penmanship on that note to Grandma".

  2. Appreciative:  Starts with "Thank you. . ." or "I appreciate".  "I appreciate the way you keep our agreement about taking out the garbage".

  3. Empowering:  Expresses faith and belief.  "I have faith in  you to make that decision".
Encouragement is the language of love--may we all improve our fluency!
