Her Bathroom - Before and After
project of the month

The 1950s vanity, sinks and toilet were donated to Green Demolitions to make way for a bright, functional and stylish new bathroom with plenty of other earth-friendly aspects.  To see and read more about this bathroom click here.

I love this shape!  It's elegant, witty and modern.  The manufacturer (Waterfall Bathroom Furniture) describes this as Marie-Antoinette meets Mies Van de Rohe.
Mindful Living & Green Design --
Healthy personal care products

On any given day, most of us use toothpaste, soap, shampoo, hair conditioner, deodorant, body lotion, shaving products and makeup, most of which have multiple toxic chemicals in them. And when you add this up over a year and a lifetime, it means we are exposed to thousands of them.  Recent studies have shown that we may actually acquire more toxins through skin absorption and inhalation than through the foods that we eat. When you rub chemicals on your skin, they can pass straight through and enter your bloodstream within minutes.  The European Union now bans more than 1,100 chemicals from personal care products because they may cause cancer, birth defects or reproductive problems. In stark contrast, just 10 ingredients are banned from cosmetics in the United States.

How to read a label (courtesy of Environmental Working Group)
Try to avoid these preservatives:
  • Words ending in paraben
  • DMDM hydantoin
  • Imidsazolidinyl urea
  • Methylchloroisothiazolinone
  • Methylisothiazolinone
  • Triclosan
  • Triclocarban
  • Triethanolamine (or TEA)
Try to avoid ingredients that start with PEG or have an -eth in the middle (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate) -- the soaps, surfactants, or lubricants that make the product work.

Try to avoid fragrance and dyes -- common, but not essential, additives that may bring excess hazard.  Look for "FRAGRANCE," "FD&C," or "D&C."
