Making Good Shoes

Susie & Tim Grade with Baby Russell
Susie Grade with son, Russell and husband Tim.

The first job I ever had was working in a gourmet European grocery story bakery - that's a mouthful! I was in high school and had to wake up at 4 am to get to work before the bakery opened. Since then I've had a variety of jobs with good bosses, bad bosses and no bosses! This Sunday we're talking about "The Garden" in Genesis as a paradigm for our work. Most of us spend 40% of our lives at work - so it's kind of a big deal to consider God's view of work.

I like the story about how Martin Luther was approached by a workingman who wanted to know how he could serve God. Luther asked him, "What is your work now?" The man said, "I'm a shoemaker." Much to the cobbler's surprise, Luther replied, "Then make good shoes and sell them at a fair price."

Luther didn't tell the man to make "Christian shoes." He didn't tell the man to leave his shoe business and become a monk. God made us in his image and desires that we reflect him in whatever we do. Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatever you do, do it wholeheartedly as though you were working for your real master and not merely for humans."

Join us Sunday as we continue our study of Genesis,
