Anticipating the Arrival

Grade Family
Susie, Tim and Russell Grade.

When Tim and I first got married one of the things we noticed was just how
different our families are when you enter the "home" for the holidays. In my family, from the moment you ring the doorbell, the decibel level ratchets up about ten notches. Everyone starts squealing and cheering in excitement that you have arrived. Tim's family is much more laid back. Don't get me wrong, they are excited you have arrived, but in true stoic, German-rooted fashion they just don't need to move too quickly or speak too loudly to show their enthusiasm for your arrival.

The word Advent means "arrival" from the Latin, Adventus. Advent is a season where we focus on the arrival of the Messiah. This can look many different ways. During Advent we remember Christ's first coming on Christmas and we look to the future in anticipation of his second coming one day. In the four weeks leading up to Christmas we remember how all of Israel was waiting and longing for a savior. We also wait with anticipation for the second coming of Christ when all that is broken will be restored in him.

I pray that the gift of this season will not be left unopened in your life. I hope this Christmas will be more than gifts, parties, and lights (great as those are). I pray it will be a spiritual time for you - a time of connection with God and others this Advent. For some people, that will be bright and loud, and for others it will be more subdued, but either way I pray you might leave this Advent changed in some way.

God of the watching ones,
The waiting ones,
The slow and suffering ones,
Give us your benediction,
Your good word for our souls,
That we might rest. Amen.

Pomegranate Place is located at 750 Clarkson Street, Denver, 80218.

Women Connect is a  monthly gathering for women! Our next fun night out is on Tuesday, December 6 from 6:45-8:00 pm at Pomegranate Place. This month we will create gift baskets that can be sold to raise money for people in need.

The baskets will include fair trade coffee and other coffee-related items. Coffee will be provided, but please consider bringing items like coffee spoons, biscotti, hot cocoa, etc. to help fill the baskets.

This will be a great chance to connect with other women, have fun, and grow together. Stop in for wine and appetizers at the beautiful historic mansion of Pomegranate Place, "an oasis for women in the city." Please bring an appetizer or bottle of wine to share. Hope to see you there!
