The Truest Thing About You
"See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!" 1 John 3:1

Last Sunday we were talking about generational dysfunction. How often the brokenness in our lives gets passed down from one generation to the next. This got me thinking. Right after we had Russell (our 12-week-old little guy) we had some family visit us in the hospital. Immediately we all start the standard conversation about whether he looks more like his mom or his dad. Now, if you really wanted to kill the moment the next time you are meeting someone's newborn, maybe you could try to trace some other characteristics. Instead of saying, "Oh look, he has his mommy's eyes" perhaps you could say, "Wow, would you look at that, it looks like he has Mommy's little temper issues. Or, "Awwww look, he has Daddy's obsessive compulsive tendencies!"
As we spiral deeper into the reality and meaning of being God's adopted children we have the opportunity to break generational patterns that are unhealthy. My primary identity is not what has happened to me, or the negative choices I've made, but rather that God has picked me up, brought me home and taken me in. He has adopted me. The truest thing about you is what God says about you and he says that you are his beloved child, precious in his sight.
May we live from that place more fully today.
