Garden Update

Fall garden should be in and producing by now. If no fall garden, start building up and preparing garden for next spring. Compost added now will help those seeds with the nutrition they'll need for next spring. Farmer's Market up town on Church Street still has great stuff - available Thursday and Saturday mornings through the fall.

Compounding 101

Occasionally we have people ask why we compound prescriptions when so many things are available commercially. We have found a lot of people, due to special health situations need the medicines in certain dosage forms that are not available. Patients in comas need medications, such as for seizures, in a rub-on gel. Pediatric patients need pediatric dosages that aren't available. Patients need medicines in a liquid form who can't swallow pills or for a GI tube.

A person with stomach or liver trouble may need medicine in a rub on gel to bypass the stomach or liver.

Grandmothers who have used a medication successfully for 20 years find it is no longer commercially available. It can usually be compounded.

Sometimes, it's just as simple as the person needs several medicines in specific dosage forms for one dose.

When a dog, cat, or ferret has to take medicines, you want to do it as fast as possible. One dose - several medicines. That can happen if medications are compatible. Also, special syringes or applicator bottles make taking these easier.

So next time, you're in the store, ask Gary if compounding could help you with any of your special medication needs.

KATHY'S KORNER

Assorted Pasta Supper

A. Pasta of choice - Elbow - Bowtie - Linguini
Enough to make 1 - 2 cups cooked
B. 2 c. chopped fresh vegetables (mushrooms, onions, garlic, bell peppers, tomatoes)
C. 1 c. cooked meat (ham, fish, shrimp, steak, chicken, turkey)
D. 2-3 T. canola oil
E. Sauce of choice - Alfredo, Marinara, Spaghetti - I like fresh ones in dairy case. I start with 3/4 - 1 cup and make sure I get everything coated.

Prepare pasta according to package directions. Drain and set aside. Using non-stick deep skillet, heat oil. Add chopped vegetables. Cook until tender. Add more oil if needed to keep them moist. Add meat. Heat thoroughly. Add sauce. Stir until all ingredients are coated. Add pasta. Continue cooking to heat thoroughly. Right before serving, add salt and pepper to taste. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese.
