Gardening Tips

Yes, I know it's winter. On Jan 15th I usually plant my onions and potatoes. Also I plan to plant all my lettuces, collards, cabbage, and spinach. All of these seeds need to be planted before soil temperatures hit above 75F or seeds will stay dormant and not sprout.

Happy Gardening!

Flu and Pneumonia Shots Are Here

Flu shots are given with the killed virus now unlike shots in the past which used the live virus. It takes approximately 4 weeks to get the full affect of the shot, so if you get the flu in that time frame you were probably already exposed before the shot had a chance to immunize you. The flu vaccine is grown in poultry eggs, so if you have allergies to eggs or poultry - you probably shouldn't get a flu shot. The flu shot changes every few years to cover the 3 most likely to be present flu viruses.

Just as the flu shot immunized you against the flu virus, the pneumonia shot immunizes you against approximately 23 kinds of pneumonia. This is not a yearly shot - Never Get Them Closer Than 3 Years. Anyone with a health risk should certainly get both immunizations. Health risks include but are not limited to: Asthma, Heart Disease, Kidney Disease, or over 65 years of age. They need to be given either at the same time or one month apart from the flu shot. If you have any questions about either shot, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

KATHY'S KORNER

Cheesy Chicken And Broccoli Casserole

1 small onion, peeled and diced
1 stick of butter, melted
15 oz. jar of cheeze whiz
10 oz. pkg. chopped frozen broccoli, thawed
1 can cream of celery soup
1-1/2 c. instant rice, uncooked
3/4 c. milk
2 c. cooked chopped chicken
1 c. butter-tasting crackers, crushed
2 c. grated cheddar cheese

Place onion and butter in pan and cook until onions are tender. Add the Cheese Whiz, broccoli, soup, rice, and milk. Stir to mix well. Place in a greased 11 x 7 inch baking pan. Top with chicken. Sprinkle with crackers and top with cheese. Bake at 350F for one hour.

Makes 6 servings.

This is a good way to use that leftover turkey in the freezer. Just thaw in the refrigerator over night and it will be ready for the casserole the next day.
