Dear Friends, Join us for an open house on Wednesday, August 10, for our September 2011 teacher training program (see below for details). At our last open house, several people brought their friends or spouses. Feel free to do the same! In late July, we will head off for the retreat portion of our 500-hour training program. The retreat is a testimony to the value of relaxation. When we put aside our agendas and are permitted to park the car for a few days to discover countryside, the body becomes softer, receptive, and undeniably grateful for a chance to respond to the rhythms of nature. As a result, our practice becomes richer, satisfying, and surprisingly "sukha" or "sweet." We are not a just part of nature --we are nature. We'll be sure to take plenty of pictures! Sincerely, Theresa & Kathryn Co-Directors, Pacific Yoga Teacher Training info@pacificyoga.com |

Eye for Alignment
Sequencing is often thought of as the ordering of postures. However, in the master classes, Skill In Asana, we have been discussing sequencing as it applies to a single pose and how you come into it. In what order do body parts move? The choices made in sequencing through the body dramatically effect the process and the outcome. Random physical organization in postures can never reach their potential in beauty and intelligence.
Accurate sequencing through the body creates postures with ease and potentially allows the practitioner to come more deeply into a pose while maintaining safety.
The difference between the two photos below demonstrates how this kind of sequencing works.

In the photo above, Dylan has a nice start on "the leanings." However, a fuller extension of his legs to parallel is yet to be realized because he is relying too heavily on his quadriceps.
In the photo below, after learning a specific sequence that emphasizes the transverse abdominals, Dylan is able to lower and straighten his legs more nearly to parallel as he is now extending efficiently through his torso. Not bad for a 10 minute lesson!
