Dear Friends,
Viveka is a hot topic at Pacific Yoga, and we find a myriad of ways to cultivate this quality in our students. Viveka or "discrimination" is the ability to see a difference, and, better yet, to articulate the difference between things we see and do.
In the yoga tradition, viveka is considered the crown jewel of knowledge* and Patanjali states that the practice of the eight limbs of yoga leads to our ability to discriminate, thereby giving us the power to choose wisely. How better to apply viveka than in our own practice and teaching of yoga poses?
As teachers, we want to learn how look at a student and make the best suggestions for healthy alignment. It's a huge responsibility.
We can't simply tell students to do what feels good or let someone practice the same pose day after day in a misaligned or unsafe manner.
Take a look at the Eye For Alignment photo below. Without reading the text, can you see the one big change that made all the difference? Our next and last open house will be Wednesday, August 10, 5:30pm - 7:00pm, where you can meet us and ask as many questions as you like. Hope to see you there!
Sincerely,
Theresa & Kathryn
