Ever wonder

WHO was UNCLE SAM?

As the story goes.... During the war of 1812, Same Wilson was a successful meat packer (...meat used to be packed in barrels) living in Troy, New York.  Each barrel of meat rations was stamped "U.S."  Although intended to stand for "United States," this caused some consternation because the more typical abbreviation at the time was "U. States." Samuel, widely known by his friends and business acquaintances as "Uncle Sam" for his genial character and sense of humor.  Taking their cue from his reputation and the "U.S." stamped on the barrels, army troops began joking that their food came from "Uncle Sam" and soon people associated "Uncle Sam" with anything related to the government.  The story grew in mythological proportions, resulting in a somewhat fictional image of Sam Wilson emerging as the white bearded, red - white - and blue clad symbol of America.

SEPTEMBER 2012

Greetings!

The Delaney Family is excited to announce the marriage of our President, Michael O'Bryan to his long time

sweetheart (and ours) Suzi Smith.

The happy couple has done extensive traveling over the

MJO Wedding

years and no trip has ever been short on love or adventure.  So it's no surprise to us that their wedding get-a-way to Niagara Falls would be anything less than an adventure of its own.   When the couple and 10 of their close friends set out the morning of their big day to do a little sight seeing across the border in Canada (literally just a short drive across the Niagara River), they had no idea that returning to New York that afternoon would be an adventure they hadn't planned on or budgeted time for.  With a five o'clock "I Do" ceremony scheduled, the wedding party began to be a little concerned when at 4:40 pm they had been sitting still at the border crossing for over an hour.  With no time to spare, their driver got out of the van and approached the Border Patrol Agent to plead their case.  The Agent's initial response was.....yeah, yeah, we've heard all these excuses before.  But with further explanation and details only a bride-to-be could provide the Agent opened a lane just for them and guided their van through the check point.  The couple and their guests arrived at the church precisely at five o'clock!

Michael and Suzi, God Bless You and may you continue to share love and adventures for many years to come!

We dedicate this issue to tradition, loyalty & longevity.

Bits and Pieces

Football is finally here and the fall leaves will soon be a festival of colors. Looking forward to that first brisk fall morning!

Delaney always takes pride in the accomplishments of its employees and their families.

Today I would like to acknowledge Chase McFarling, son of Elizabeth and Greg McFarling, for recently earning the Boy Scouts of Americas highest honor, Eagle Scout. Chase (and his parents!) have worked diligently for many years to attain this award. The title of Eagle Scout is held for life, thus the phrase "Once an Eagle, Always an Eagle." Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and demonstrating service, leadership, and Scout Spirit through the Boy Scout Oath and Law.

CONGRATULATIONS CHASE!!

Have a great Month!

They're FINALLY here! After months of online rumors, NESTLÉ® CRUNCH® Girl Scout edition is available for a limited time only.  The NESTLÉ CRUNCH Girl Scouts Candy Bars, Girl Scout Barmanufactured under a national license from Girl Scouts of the USA, are a sweet reinvention of the three most popular Girl Scout Cookie flavors:

Thin Mints™ -- Dark chocolate cookie wafers and mint chocolate crème, topped with airy crispies and a rich, dark chocolatey coating

Caramel & Coconut -- Cookie wafers layered with coconut caramel crème and chewy caramel topped with toasted coconut and drizzled with caramel stripes

Peanut Butter Crème -- Cookie wafers layered with smooth roasted peanut butter crème, topped with airy crispies and a creamy, chocolatey coating

One dedicated fan bid an astonishing $650 for the only first-edition set of three candy bars from the first production runs at an auction held at Galerie Michael in Beverly Hills. Certified by Heritage Auctions, the world's largest collectibles auctioneer, the set of candy bars were appraised at $500-nearly 200 times the retail value of the bars, legitimizing NESTLÉ CRUNCH Girl Scout Candy Bars as the most valuable candy bars in the world.

Dog sits by owners grave for six years

One loyal dog hasn't moved from his master's side for the last six years -- refusing to let even death part them.

Capitan

German shepherd, Capitán, ran away from home after his owner and best friend, Manuel Guzman, died in 2006. A week later Guzman's family, who live in Cordoba, Argentina, found the heartbroken dog grieving at the grave site, reported Dog Heirs. "We had never taken him to the cemetery so it is a mystery how he managed to find the place," Veronica Guzman, Manuel's widow, told the Sun. Every Sunday, for the past six years, the Guzman family has gone to the cemetery to visit both Manuel and Capitán. Although the dog often leaves the cemetery to spend a short period of time with his family, he always returns to the grave site before dark.

"I don't think he wanted to leave Manuel on his own at night," Veronica told the Sun. Cemetery director, Hector Baccega, said that staff at the cemetery in central Argentina are now feeding and taking care of the dog.

"During the day he sometimes has a walk around the cemetery, but always rushes back to the grave. And every day, at six o'clock sharp, he lies down on top of the grave and stays there all night," Baccega told La Voz.

Although the Guzman family would like to take Capitán home with them, they understand the dog's immense loyalty to his best friend.

The Portland Public School system will no longer allow soft drinks to be sold on school property - including at high school football games. School officials are also banning Coke Ban the sale of gridiron staples like buttered popcorn and potato chips.

What will the 'food police' at the Portland Public School system accomplish other than decrease revenue at football games?  Will five or six games, lasting about three hours each, alter the eating habits of students?

Football fans will be encouraged to snack on baked tortilla chips, reduced fat string cheese and hummus. What, no quiche or zucchini fries?  Wow - hummus! Nothing says "let's go to a football game" like a nice big plate of hummus!

World's Oldest woman, Happy Sweet 116th Birthday!

Georgia woman Besse Cooper, the world's oldest person, recently celebrated her 116th birthday to become onlyBesse Cooper   the eighth person in the world and the fourth American to ever have been verified by Guinness World Records as having reached that age.   On her big day, Cooper was presented with a plaque by Guinness World Records senior consultant of gerontology, Robert Young during her birthday festivities at her nursing home in Monroe, Ga. Her secret to longevity is simple. "I mind my own business,'' she said in a Guinness news release. "And I don't eat junk food.''   Hummus anyone?

7 Must-Haves for Your Emergency Kit

If the Farmer's almanac is true, when disaster strikes and the grid crashes candles will get you only so far, and if you don't have a scout handy, here's what you should have:   Sardine Can

1.  Four lamps in one- detachable light panels, each panel having its own on/off switch and is rechargeable on the base.

2. Battery-Operated TV is handy for checking the latest news and updates, runs up to 1.5 hours. Some models even come with a car adapter, which is handy for roadside viewing or using your vehicle as a power supply.

3. Portable power pack. When the grid goes dark, a portable power station is a quick-and-easy way to run the gadgets you need most.

4.  Radio that won't die.  A disaster-rated radio must keep working even after its batteries give out.  You can run it on solar power, by using a hand crank, or with off-the-shelf AA or AAA batteries. The radio can receive AM, FM, shortwave and weather-alert broadcasts. It also has a USB port for charging certain cell phones, as well as an LED flashlight, a flashing beacon and an emergency siren.

5.  Mega generator.  This one would be pretty hard to carry around in a back pack.

6.  Potable water.  In a serious emergency, water from the municipal supply may not be safe to drink.

7.  Grandma's phone.  Cordless, cellular and Internet phones may be popular, but the venerable corded handset has one distinct advantage: When paired with land-line phone service, it's the odds-on favorite to keep working during a blackout.
