 THE DELANEY POST
JULY 2012

Greetings!

This year will be the first time I have traveled outside the United States over the Fourth of July holiday.  Today I start a two week business trip to China and Taiwan.  Every time I am out of the country I have a profound appreciation for the Red, White and Blue.  With all our faults and problems, we are without a doubt, the best country in the world!! For some in the world, to be born and raised in the US is like winning the life lottery.  So as you watch fireworks or enjoy your cookout with family and friends take a moment to be thankful for the sacrifices of all those who have made this country GREAT!!  In this election year also remember that you have a right AND a responsibility to contribute to the future of this great nation by voting this November.

Have a wonderful and safe holiday!

Bits and Pieces

The First Official United States Flag

This 13-Star  Flag became the Official United States Flag
13 Star American Flag
on June 14th, 1777 and lasted for a period of 18 years. The only President to serve under this flag was George Washington (1789-1797).  Each star and stripe represented a Colony of which there were thirteen, united nearly one year earlier by the Declaration of Independence.   Are you familiar with your American Flag Etiquette:

  • The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source.
  • The flag should be flown in fair weather, unless the flag is designed for inclement weather use.
  • The flag is flown upside down only as a distress signal.
  • The flag should not be used for any decoration in general. Bunting of blue, white and red stripes is available for these purposes. The blue stripe of the bunting should be on the top.
  • The flag should never have any mark, insignia, letter, word, number, figure, or drawing of any kind placed on it, or attached to it.
  • When the flag is lowered, no part of it should touch the ground or any other object; it should be received by waiting hands and arms. To store the flag it should be folded neatly and ceremoniously.
  • The flag should be cleaned and mended when necessary.
  • When a flag is so worn it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country, it should be destroyed by burning in a dignified manner.

The Unlikely American hero in China

So what has been trending there? Talk of "American French Fry Brother" - otherwise known as Jason Loose, a 23yr old from Thousand Oaks, CA (He also goes by the Chinese French Fryname Lu Jiesen.) The recent graduate from Arizona State is currently studying at Nanjing University.

Jason bought a bag of McDonald's french fries for a homeless woman there, and then he poured her some water. A bystander took photos of the act, and the images have been rocketing around Chinese cyberspace, where someone lovingly called this new hero, "American French Fry Brother."

Besides being popular on Chinese microblogging site Weibo there's also been coverage in newspapers and on TV.  Why the hubbub over a simple act?  Jason says many Chinese correspondents have told him that Chinese society has grown cold and uncaring, and when China saw someone from outside the country doing a nice thing on their home turf, it struck a nerve.
