"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover. "

Greetings!
April is National Autism Awareness Month. The CDC released a new study Thursday that estimates 1 in 88 children are affected by autism compared to the 1 in 150 children affected just 10 years earlier. While this may seem like a drastic increase in such a short period, it may not be the disorder that is increasing but the number of children diagnosed.
Years ago, when my son was diagnosed, autism was not as recognized as it is today. We spent many vacations at the beach. Sand Castles, bike rides, good family fun. One struggle we had with Bennett was to get him to go into the ocean. He loved swimming in pools, but the ocean terrified him. Jaws is one of his favorite movies and I think it created an unnatural fear. One day I went into the water, looked around, and yelled back to him "no fish in the water today." He gleefully jumped into the water. The next day, same thing. I think there's a moral to this story, but I'm not sure what it is.
Increased autism awareness helps families better prepare for these type of challenges that they face every day. At Delaney we will continue to support autism awareness throughout 2012 by donating $1 for each of our new Silver Oak faucets sold.
Congratulations to the Kentucky Wildcats for winning the NCAA Championship and to the Kansas Jayhawks for making it to the final game.
This weekend as I watch my favorite sporting event of the year - the Masters - I'll be doing it 20 pounds lighter. Clothes fitting better, but still a long way to go. Thanks for all of the well wishes.

100th Anniversary of the Titanic
With the 100th Anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic fast approaching, interest is building all over the world for this historic occasion. There are cruises setting sail, enabling descendants of Titanic passengers, enthusiasts, and cruise passengers to be part of history by being together at the site where the Titanic sank on its maiden and fateful voyage. They will pay their respects at a special Memorial Service to take place on April 14th at the exact time the Titanic sank 100 years before.
In New York, Guernsey's Auctioneers & Brokers is taking bids on The Titanic Collection which consists of more than 5,500 artifacts recovered from the wreck site. The range of artifacts is nothing short of extraordinary. For example, there are approximately 100 pieces of jewelry, porcelain, silverware, and binoculars. The "Big Piece" is a seventeen ton section of Titanic's hull, complete with rivets and portholes. A 2007 US court decision made it possible for the items to be sold, but the collection must be kept together. It has been appraised at $189 million. Bids are being accepted now, however bidders must be court approved in order to assure The Titanic Collection will be properly maintained.

The Bermuda Triangle Mystery
You won't find it on any official map and you won't know when you cross the line, but according to some people, the Bermuda Triangle is a very real place where dozens of ships, planes and people have disappeared with no good explanation. Scientists have documented deviations from the norm in the area and have found some interesting formations on the seafloor within the Bermuda Triangle's boundaries. The Bermuda Triangle is located off the Southeastern coast of the United States in the Atlantic Ocean, with its apexes in the vicinities of Bermuda, Miami, Florida, and San Juan, Puerto Rico. It covers roughly 500,000 square miles. Over the past 100 years, the Bermuda Triangle has seen what some say is a significant and inordinately high number of unexplained disappearances of planes, ships and people. Some reports say that as many as 100 ships and planes have been reported missing in the area and more than 1,000 lives have been lost. Read 'Disappearance' stories here |
A Walk in the Rain = Pain
A few years ago, Dr. Alan Baptist, associate program director for allergy and immunology at the University of Michigan, faced one of the toughest allergy cases imaginable. A young woman came to seek his help with migraine-like pain. Every time she came into contact with water she suffered headaches, along with reddish welts on her skin. It turned out she was allergic. To water.
If you were allergic to water, how could you bathe? Or swim? A walk in the rain could turn into a painful afternoon. Yet some people truly are allergic to water, suffering with a condition known as aquagenic urticaria, or water-caused hives. First described in 1964, the allergy is very rare, although Baptist thinks it may be seriously underdiagnosed. The body's rejection of water is wildly counterproductive, mainly because we are made up mostly of water, our cells are filled with it and we can't live without it. However, in almost all cases, the allergic reaction is ignited only when the outer skin contacts water. That's how people with aquagenic urticaria can drink liquids and don't have an adverse reaction to their own cells. But they can be allergic to their tears if they cry, and even their own sweat. Patients can be allergic to saliva too. While a simple peck on the cheek or lips isn't typically symptom producing, you could pay a high price for passionate kissing. |
