MARCH  2012

Greetings!

When I graduated from college I went to work for International Paper in their Wood Products and Resources Division. They had a distribution center in Atlanta where I became an outside salesman selling lumber and plywood to building supply companies. One of my customers was the general manager of a full service lumberyard in rural north Georgia. He was an older, crotchety cuss that knew everything and I was that young buck that knew nothing....you get the picture. Every two weeks, like clockwork, I would go out to his lumberyard and take his inventory and then go to the office to see if I could sell him something. He would make me wait....and wait.... and wait while he talked to everyone that came in the store. I knew it was my turn when he would glance my way and take the toothpick out of his mouth. I watched that man eat donuts, drink coffee, talk to his friends for hours and never take that toothpick out of his mouth. But I knew when it was my turn...out came the toothpick. He wanted to make sure I understood him clearly when he looked at me and said "Don't need nuthin' today".

And so it became my mission in life to win him over.  It took a full year until one day he actually smiled at me. My killer instinct knew that I had him.  He became one of my best business friends and a great customer. Eventually we got to the point where I could go in his office, get the PO book and write up my own orders. Moral of the story...don't give up. Set your sights on a goal and stick with it.  The next smile could mean your next sale!!!

Mutifamily Buildings to Lead U.S. Construction Gains

Construction of multifamily units will lead the U.S. Building Industry again this year, allowing housing to contribute to growth for the first time in seven years, according to economists Michelle Meyer and Celia Chen

Work will begin on about 260,000 apartment buildings and townhouse developments in 2012, up 45 percent from last year and the most since 2008, according to Meyer, a senior economist at Bank of America Corp.   Chen, an economist at Moody's Analytics Inc. in West Chester, Pennsylvania, is even more optimistic, projecting a record 74 percent jump to 310,000.

Home ownership rates, which have declined to the lowest levels since 1998, may keep dropping as the foreclosure crisis turns more Americans into renters.  In addition, household formation will probably accelerate as an improving economy and growing employment embolden more people to stop sharing residences and strike out on their own.  The ongoing shift from owning to renting is increasing the demand for multifamily construction.

About Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Savings was conceived by Benjamin Franklin in 1784 but was not implemented until the First World War.Daylight Savings Time  The practice has caused controversy since it began and has gone through many changes over the years, including the most recent change in 2007 extending it one month to begin on the 2nd Sunday in March and end on the first Sunday of November.  In the US, states have an option of whether they choose to observe Daylight Saving Time (Arizona and Hawaii do not), however if they do observe they must do so uniformly.  The main purpose of DST is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening. The rationale behind Daylight Saving Time is to save energy in the summer months by extending the daylight in the evening when more people would be using more lights and electricity.  Countries all over the world have set Daylight Saving Time for various reasons, including in times of war, and times of economic struggles to save on energy.

In 1907, Englishman William Willett, an avid golfer who disliked cutting his rounds short at dusk advocated Daylight Saving Time in the pamphlet, "Waste of Daylight" where he wrote:

"Everyone appreciates the long, light evenings. Everyone laments their shortage as Autumn approaches; and everyone has given utterance to regret that the clear, bright light of an early morning during Spring and Summer months is so seldom seen or used."

Don't forget to turn your clock forward on March 11th, and back again on November 4th.

Cheaper Pennies and Nickels

The U.S. Mint is facing a problem -- especially during these penny-pinching times. It turns out it costs more toNickels and Pennies make pennies and nickels than the coins are worth.  To be precise, it cost 2.4 cents to make one penny in 2011 and about 11.2 cents for each nickel.  Given the number of coins that the mint produces (4.3 billion pennies and 914 million nickels last year alone) those costs add up pretty quickly: a little more than $100 million for each coin. Even if a cheaper metal can be used, it might not take the cost of a penny down to less than a penny.

In the 1980's Military Command determined that the cost of shipping pennies oversease to US military bases was more epensive than the pennies themselves.  Therefore, they implemented the rounding up/down policy that the EUR had been using for years.  Research of the rounding practice has shown that over the course of time, rounding up and down is a break-even process; you neither win or lose.  See a penny pick it up???

First Tweet from a Driver Racing

Daytona 500

When NASCAR driver Brad Keselowski's car was stopped by the gigantic fire ahead of him at the Daytona Car on Fire 500, he took his phone out of his pocket, snapped a pic and tweeted it. Race car driver Brad Keselowski decided to make Twitter history by tweeting while racing.  "Fire! My view," @Keselowski wrote. The fire erupted when Juan Pablo Montoya spun out of control under the yellow flag and hit a track-drying truck, an extraordinarily rare mishap that led to a lengthy delay. When a Twitter follower asked if any other drivers were tweeting, Keselowski replied, "Nope. They all think I'm crazy."

100 Million Mr. and Mrs. Potato Heads

Over the past six decades, more than 100 million MisterMr. Potatoe Head and Mrs. Potato Head toys have been sold.  Mr. Potato head will turn 60 this month and be old enough to draw Social Security.  The iconic Hasbro toy first showed up back in 1952, and has been a staple in playrooms ever since.  He has appeared in television commercials, and even had a supporting role in the hit "Toy Story" movie series.  But those weren't  his first brushes with stardom.  He actually made history from the beginning....Mr. Potato Head was the first toy to be advertised on television.

5 Cups of Coffee a Day Can Be Good For You!

It lowers blood pressure, prevents diabetes and may even fight skin cancer.  Even coffee drinkers find it hard to believe that their favorite pick-me-up is healthful, but it5 Cups of Coffee seems to be true. People who drink coffee regularly are less likely to have a stroke or get diabetes or Parkinson's disease than those who don't drink it. Coffee contains hundreds of antioxidants and other bioactive compounds, including some of the same polyphenols that are found in fruits, vegetables, wine and green tea. Polyphenols are potent antioxidants that inhibit inflammation as well as cell damage. More coffee might be better for disease prevention. For example, coffee has a dose-response relationship with diabetes. People who drink five cups a day seem to benefit more than those who drink three cups...and two or three cups a day might be better than just one cup. More than 20 studies have found that coffee drinkers are less likely to get diabetes than those who don't drink coffee.  READ MORE HERE.
