The difference between a successful person and others is not a lack of strength, not a lack of knowledge, but rather a lack of will.

Delaney Post
FEBRUARY  2012

Greetings!

I recently read a book called "Talent is Overrated" by Geoff Colvin. It details what separates world class performers from everyone else, very Lombardi like. The basic premise is the biggest limitations we face in life are self imposed and that dedicated practice is the deciding factor between the greats and the not so greats. The ability to perform at high levels is earned not given. It talks about Mozart, Tiger Woods, Jerry Rice, Bobby Fischer and others; a very interesting read.

At our recent Annual Company Meeting I reflected on Colvin's words as they relate to Delaney. Each day we strive to improve our service and it's only through the dedicated practice that Colvin mentions that we rise above each challenge. As we enter 2012, our commitment to maintain a high level of service is as important as ever.

Have a great Month and treat someone special on the 14th!

Michael O'Bryan

President

PS: My New Year's Resolution withstood the month of January and I've lost nine pounds thus far. The plantar fascia tear has mended so I am back to the elliptical. I also bought a new juicer - this is getting serious! Next thing you know I will be eating egg whites and tofu.

Bits and Pieces

SUPER BOWL XLVI

THE GAME:  The 65-year-old Coughlin made NFL history on Sunday, becoming the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl by guiding the Giants to a 21-17 victory over New England for his second NFL championship in four years.

THE ADS: Yes, even in an economic slump a 30-second commercial costs $3.5 million, up $400,000 from last year, despite that many of the commercials were seen online more than a week before they aired on television.

THE HALF-TIME SHOW:  With 114 million Super Bowl viewers, Sunday's halftime show was, by all accounts, the most-watched ever and "Madonna" was the most Googled term during the game.

Here's a look at some fun facts about the Super Bowl past and present

  • Bill Belichick and Tom Brady are the first coach-quarterback duo to reach five Super Bowls
  • The second-largest food consumption day in the U.S. is Super Bowl Sunday, second only to Thanksgiving
  • Super Bowl 2012 night makes a landmark event for Twitter, with two new records for the number of tweets per second (TPS): Madonna's halftime performance with 10,245 TPS & the end of the game with 12,233 TPS
  • 56.4 percent of the country's TV homes were tuned in during the halftime show, while only 47.8 tuned in to watch the whole game
  • 2012 Super Bowl was the first to be played in Indianapolis
  • There are still four NFL teams that have not yet punched their first Super Bowl ticket: Cleveland Browns, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, and the Jacksonville Jaguars

Love, Your Valentine

The history of Valentine's Day--and the story of its patron saint--is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains Valentine vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he become associated with this ancient rite? When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, a priest, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine's actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he be put to death. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first "valentine" greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl--possibly his jailor's daughter--who visited him during his confinement. Before his death, it is alleged that he wrote her a letter signed "From your Valentine," an expression that is still in use today.

Happy Presidents Day!

Originally designed to celebrate the birthday of the Father of our Country, George Washington, President's Day now honors all our Presidents.  Things you probably didn't Presidents Dayknow about some of our U.S. Presidents:

  • FDR  made some phenomenal changes to our nation, but did you also know he had a movie credit?
  • Abraham Lincoln and JFK: should we remember them for ending slavery or inspiring a generation?  Or should we honor them for winning a wrestling match and getting into Harvard despite a shoddy application, respectively?
  • Ronald Reagan did stand-up comedy in Las Vegas for a few weeks
  • Ulysses S. Grant received a $20 speeding ticket for riding his horse too fast down a Washington street.
  • Herbert Hoover and his wife learned to speak Mandarin Chinese fluently and would speak the language around the White House to prevent others from understanding them
  • Warren Harding lost the entire set of white house china in a game of poker

CDC: Too Much Sodium in Most U.S. Diets

Most of the sodium comes from 10 types of foods, which are responsible for more than 40 percent of people's sodium intake. Those are:

- breads and rolls
- luncheon meat such as deli ham or turkey
- pizzaSalt
- poultry
- soups
- cheeseburgers and other sandwiches
- cheese
- pasta dishes
- meat dishes such as meat loaf
- snack foods such as potato chips, pretzels and popcorn

"Too much sodium raises blood pressure, which is a major risk factor for heart disease and stroke," said CDC director Dr. Thomas R. Frieden in announcing the new report. "These diseases kill more than 800,000 Americans each year and contribute an estimated $273 billion in health care costs."  Click Here to learn more.

Unemployed Irishman Scores $1.84 Million Home

How did an unemployed, broke, nearly homeless Irishman build a €1.4 billion ($1.84 million) home? It turns out, the Central Bank of Ireland was just giving money away. HeBillion Euro Home showed up at the Central Bank of Ireland mint and hauled out two trailers full of cash. So what's the catch?

Dublin artist Frank Buckley didn't use the cash to pay for his house. Instead, the billion euros literally became his house. That's because the bills were decommissioned and shredded, packaged neatly into  6-inch by 2-inch bricks, each worth (once upon a time) €50,000. Now, the former euro bills have been fused into his new home - and a striking art project, located in the lobby of a four-year-old Dublin office building that's still seeking its first tenants. He's stacked the bricks full of shredded bills into million-euro walls and has scattered thousands of euros across the floor as a makeshift carpet. Artwork made from the bills and euro coins adorns the walls. Say what you will about the euro's future, but the fact that the bills are currently decorating Buckley's home - well, that paints a rather grim picture, doesn't it?
