Greetings!
Traditions, family, football and food are all part of my Thanksgiving holiday. An important part of our family tradition includes each person, young and old, giving their own special thanks before Thanksgiving Dinner. This year I am especially thankful to have a life long relationship with a very dear lady, my Aunt Francie. Sister Frances Ann O'Bryan has been a Roman Catholic nun for over 70 years. Her entire adult life has been guided by her faith and the desire to serve others. She lived in St. Louis for most of her life, teaching parochial school. After she retired, for several years she continued to tutor special needs people to read and write. This year Aunt Francie turned 91 and moved to the Sisters of Loretta Motherhouse in Loretta, Kentucky. About three weeks ago I got a call from the Motherhouse and was told that the doctors had found a fast growing cancer in her chest. Because of her age there was no plan to treat the disease. When I went to see her in the infirmary I found her weak in body but strong in spirit. As usual she did not want to dwell on her own predicament but wanted to hear about the kids and our plans for Thanksgiving. To the end, her thoughts and concerns are about others. She has always been and will always be an inspiration to me and all that have known her. God bless Aunt Francie.
Happy Thanksgiving!

Has humanity hit the 7 Billionth Milestone?
Since modern homo sapiens first appeared around 50000 B.C., an estimated total of 108 billion people have lived on earth. This means that 6% of all human beings ever born are still alive today. By the time you read this newsletter, the 7 billionth person may have been born. In 2008 the UN predicted that the World's population would hit 7 Billion inhabitants early spring of 2012, but in May 2011, they changed their prediction to reach the 7 billion mark in late October 2011, which according to the UN, it did. But the U.S. Census Bureau is coming to a very different conclusion, stating that the U.N. has overcounted and is arguing that the world's population won't reach 7 billion until sometime in March 2012 (an Austrian group argues that it won't be until July 2014). By 2025, forecasters say we will add 1 billion more people. The ten most populated countries are 1)China, 1.3 billion 2)India, 1.2 billion 3)The United States, 310 million 4)Indonesia, 240 million 5)Brazil, 195 million 6)Pakistan, 174 million 7)Nigeria, 158 million 8)Bangladesh, 174 million 9)Russia, 143 million 10)Japan, 127 million. |

11-11-11
On the topic of dates, the mystical date 11-11-11 holds significance to those who believe in the date's supernatural abilities. To hear numerologists and others tell it, a boom of good cosmic energy will hit the planet Earth that day, making it a great day to tie the knot and yes, even live happily ever after. Many couples around the globe are planning to say "I do" on that day, while several other couples planned ahead for the chance to have a baby born on 11-11-11 (Valentine's Day 2011 would have been a good day to start "planning").
However for many others the main significance of this date is that it is Veterans Day. The day to remember and honor ALL those who have served in the United States Military. Veterans Day National Ceremony is held each year on November 11th at precisely 11a.m. at Arlington National Cemetery. A wreath is placed at the Tomb of the Unknowns and a bugler sounds Taps. Let's all take a moment this Thanksgiving season to thank these brave men and women for their service to our great country.
Delaney's proud to have recently participated in a local letter writing campaign that collectively resulted in over 405,925 (and counting) hand-written Thank You letters to be delivered on Thanksgiving Day to each and every soldier stationed or deployed outside the United States. We encourage you to find an organization in your area or contact the USO on how you can Support the Troops this Holiday Season!! |

Today's American Household
There was a time when it was very common for American families to have a mom, dad, and half a dozen kids...after all, someone had to help on the farm and kids were free labor! But in today's age, what is the "typical" American household? The answer might be surprising. Click on the image below to see how your family compares:

Please Pass the Turducken
On Thanksgiving Day many Americans sit down to be thankful and feast on bread rolls, green beans casserole, pumpkin pie..... and turducken? Turducken is an English dish dating back to the 18th century, consisting of layers of birds baked in a standing crust. Through time the dish has somewhat changed, and today's turducken consists of a de-boned chicken stuffed into a de-boned duck, which itself is stuffed into a de-boned turkey. Sometimes included are breadcrumbs and sausage meat. John Madden, a Turducken diehard fan and NFL analyst, popularized the Turducken. The American tradition of watching football after the feast concluded with Madden presenting a Turducken to the winning team of the Thanksgiving Bowl. |

Thanksgiving Bowl
After the blessings are said and the family is fed....bring on the football. Over the years, football has become synonymous with this joyous festival of Thanksgiving. Professional football was the last of the contemporary trends of celebrating the spirit of Thanksgiving. In 1874, eleven years after Lincoln's Thanksgiving Proclamation, the first intercollegiate football games were played. Two years later the Intercollegiate Football Association was formed in the northeast, which instituted a championship game principally to amuse the people on Thanksgiving Day. Church services would wind up early to accomodate the fans, and it had gained so much popularity that Thanksgiving Day football games accross the nation became a way of life. It shaped itself into the greatest tradition in the history of American professional team sports. |
