SEPTEMBER 2011

Greetings!

Ten years ago I was preparing to travel on a business trip to Asia when the 9/11 terrorist attack forced all of us to reexamine our personal and business lives. My thoughts about this horrific day and it's effect on my family, my employees and my business were documented in a letter that I sent out to everyone that I knew. Many of you might remember this letter for it's emphasis on remaining strong in the face of adversity and facing our realistic fears with faith and resolve. This letter was also sent to President G.W. Bush. He thoughtfully responded with his own words of thanks and encouragement. Ten years later we are still together, resilient in our determination to protect our beliefs and the future for our families.

When my son Bennett was four years old he was diagnosed with Autism. This month he will be twenty one and now works part time in our warehouse. For all of you that use our Bennett lever, it was named in his honor. This month Delaney will support the battle against Autism by participating in the Georgia Race for Autism.

Fall and football have always been intertwined in my life. The changing of the leaves and weekend rivalries are like mom and apple pie. Pure Americana!!! Enjoy the month and reserve some quiet time to be thankful to all that protect our way of life on a daily basis.

Bits and Pieces
That September Day

Many Americans will be reflecting on where they were 10 years ago when news of the September 11th attacks were first reported.  As the tragedy of that day unfolded, Americans drew closer together to comfort each other, support each other, and protect each other.  Smiles were given in grocery store lines where only hurried gazes existed the day before.  Strangers held doors and said Thank You, a consideration that seemed to have been forgotten previously. Crowds of people of every race, creed, and color joined hands to mourn those who perished.  As we remember that day, which will forever be etched in history, let us not only remember those innocent lives lost and the bravery that was shown, but also the patriotism that was born as people raised their American flags high and pledged allegiance loud.  Here, ten years later, may we hold strong to those values that brought us together during that difficult time.

Past and present leaders will attend a ceremony on 9/11/2011 marking the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.  This will be the first opportunity for families to view the names of loved ones etched into the memorials that now stand where the towers once did.  Former President George W. Bush, Rudolph Guiliani, Mayor Michael Bloomberg, President Barack Obama and others will read short poems or quotes during the solemn but stately event.

Ga Autism Race
The Race is on at Delaney as we strap on our running shoes for the Georgia Race for Autism 5K.  October 1, 2011 Delaney employees will participate in the 3.1 mile run in honor of fellow employee Bennett O'Bryan (Click Here for Full Story).  We need your help to help raise money for this great cause.  For every "LIKE" that we get on our Facebook Page, Delaney will donate $1 to benefit Autism in Georgia.  Then on October 3rd check back to see how we've done.

Runners...Ready, Set, GO!!!!  See you at the Finish Line!

Rugby

The Rugby World Cup

One of the largest international sporting competitions in the world, held only every four years, is about to begin in New Zealand.  The event will be played over seven weekends beginning September 10th.  The game of rugby football was first played at the Rugby School in England in the 1750s.  The original game allowed handing off the ball but no one was allowed to run with ball in hand towards the opponent's goal.  With no set number of players per side (and at times hundreds taking part) the game often resembled an enormous rolling maul.  By about 1860 the rules had changed and Rugby adopted a new set of rules, and from that is where American football was born.  Both are a full contact team sports that consist of kicking at a goal or running with an oval ball in hand.  Noticeable differences are the lack of padding and helmets worn by Rugby players.  Rugby vs. American football: Which is tougher?  Tune in to decide: Rugby World Cup matches will be broadcast on US network television for the first time on NBC and Universal Sports.

The Big House
Michigan

It was through college football however that American football really gained popularity in the United States.  So it is only fitting that the Michigan University Stadium is the largest football stadium in the United States with an official capacity of 109,901.  Since 1975 it has drawn a crowd in excess of 100,000, an active streak of more than 200 contests.  The size of the crowd in the stadium on Saturdays nearly matches the city's population of 114,000.

On September 10, 2011 history will be made at The Big House.  The Michigan Wolverines will take on Notre Dame's Fighting Irish under the lights - for a historic first ever night game match up at Michigan Stadium.

Food or Football?

Football or Food?  Over 30,000 students in Michigan may find it harder to pay for seats to their favorite football games after the state's eligibility rules regarding food aid were tightened.  Federal rules don't allow most college students to collect "food stamps" yet it's estimated that more than 30,000 students were collecting aide in Michigan because of rules the state created allowing almost all college students to be eligible.  In efforts to change the culture of the state's welfare program (and save about $75 million a year), thousands of students may now have to decide - Football or Food.

College Football Kick Off

Tonight is the official kick off to the 2011 College Football season with Saturday marking the first key match ups.  The #3 ranked Oregon Ducks will faceoff against the #4 LSU Tigers on football's biggest stage, Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas.  Looking back in time, it is believed that this is only the third time in history that two top five teams have opened the season against each other on a neutral field.  And how does a team from the University of Oregon, located in the small city of Eugene, get so good?  At the top of the list of reasons:  their uniforms of course.  Nike founder, Phil Knight, also 1959 Oregon graduate, dedicates incredible resources to the university's athletic programs.  Nike has the outfitting rights for the Ducks and the uniforms have taken on a fan base of their own.  By introducing newly designed pants, jerseys, helmets, socks & shoes each year.....there are well over 500 possible uniform combinations.  Plain and simple - these sometimes quacky.....sometimes Batman-like combinations draw attention (including that of future recruits).

5 Must Have Back-to-School Gadgets

The days of clunky backpacks and heavy Trapper Keepers are long ago and far away.  Today's students are more tech savvy than ever, so to keep them on track with their studeies and up-to-date with their tech tools, here's this year's must have back-to-school gadgets:

Gadgets

1.  The Livescrive smartpen is essentially a ballpoint pen with a tiny computer, microphone and digital audio recorder.  The pen records what you write on its special paper and synchonizes those notes with any audio it has recorded.

2.  The Flying Alarm Clock will get you up and up on time-- snooze button not included.  When the alarm goes off the propeller-like top charges up and flies into the air.  The only way to turn off the alarm is to find the flying top and return it back to the clock base.

3.  The Amazon Kindle is one of the best ebook readers on the market.  And now you can even rent textbooks and make bookmarks, highlight and notes on text.

4.  A Smorgasbord of Apps for That New Tablet.  The Study Buddy app keeps track of your actual study and break time to help you manage your time and study sessions.  Don't forget the Essay Planner app, Flashcards Plus app, etc. etc.

5.  The Ultimate Backpack which has a built-in siren and strobe light, providing students with an extra level of mobile personal security.  In seconds, you attract immediate attention to a dangerous or harmful situation.
