SEPTEMBER 2010
Greetings!

It's very popular to be popular. Most people like to be liked by others. And many of us like to know what others like. When a lot of people like something, there's a good chance we'd like to know why they like it, because we like to know what's popular.

And often times we don't just like to know what's popular, but we like to eat what's popular, drink what's popular, drive what's popular, and watch what's popular. People like popularity and popular people are liked. Like...you know what I mean? J

So this month I'll share some of the recent winners of the never-ending popularity contest that is the American economy. Plus a few other tidbits thrown in for good measure. I hope you like it!

POPULARLY UNPOPULAR - Popularity doesn't always equal affection. Take Facebook. Five hundred million people use it, but a survey conducted by ForeSee Results found that among 30 websites it tracks, Facebook ranked second from the bottom for customer satisfaction. Perhaps it's a variation on the concept of "satisficing." The word "satisfice", coined in 1956, combines the words "satisfy" and "suffice," and is meant to describe how consumers make choices following a path of least resistance. In the case of social media, you go where your friends are. Facebook isn't the only satisficing option out there. The most popular smartphone in North America is the Blackberry. According to research firm Gartner, it still commands 41% of the smartphone market vs. 22% for Apple's iPhone. Yet a recent survey found that only 30% of Blackberry owners were satisfied with their device, vs. 55% two years ago. Drops in satisfaction surveys can be reversed, and once-popular items can become popular again. A May, 2010 survey found that after a period of decline, more users are happier with Windows - 76% - than in any previous survey period. If Microsoft can turn it around, anyone can.

AFGHANISTAN - Seven U.S. troops have died in weekend attacks in Afghanistan's embattled southern and eastern regions, while officials found the bodies Sunday of five kidnapped campaign aides working for a female candidate in the western province of Herat. Two servicemen died in bombings Sunday in southern Afghanistan, while two others were killed in a bomb attack in the south on Saturday and three in fighting in the east the same day, NATO said. Their identities and other details were being withheld until relatives could be notified. The latest deaths bring to 42 the number of American forces who died this past month in Afghanistan after July's high of 66. A total of 62 international forces have died in the country this month, including seven British troops. Fighting is intensifying with the addition of 30,000 U.S. troops to bring the total number of international forces in Afghanistan to 120,000...100,000 of them American.  Brave men and women are giving their lives for our security.  Don't miss an opportunity to thank our service men and women when you have the chance!

AUTOS - Car leasing is on the rise again...likely to account for one-fifth of auto sales this year, nearly twice its share in late 2008 and early 2009. Somewhat looser credit at car companies' financing arms, banks, credit unions, etc., is helping spur consumer interest in a new set of wheels. Also a plus...the likelihood of stronger resale values is reassuring lenders that they'll get enough for the vehicles when they come off lease to offer attractive rates to consumers who want them now. Reduced car sales in 2009-2010 spell a lack of late-model used cars down the road.

RETAIL Wal-Mart, Best Buy, and Sears-Kmart are taking aim at home entertainment. All three plan to get into the business of selling video over the Internet, offering movies, TV show episodes and other content that will stream directly to TVs. It's another venue for marketing and ads as well as a new revenue source. Essentially the giant retailers will get an "in-house" media outlet to reach consumers. For other businesses, challenges and opportunities. More competition for cable and traditional movie rental firms. Sponsorship possibilities for advertisers. And for content creators such as movie studios...another battle over royalty fees.

DUMMY OF THE MONTH - STATESVILLE, NC - Authorities say a man was killed while waiting with several friends for a "ghost train" from a North Carolina legend. The legend developed from a train wreck on August 27, 1891, that killed about two dozen people and injured many others. Folklore claims that the accident can be heard on each anniversary. So anyhow ---Christopher Kaiser of Charlotte was killed last Friday about 2:45am as he  waited with friends on a railroad trestle. Witnesses say about 12 people were on the trestle actually hoping to see this ghost train when a real train rounded the bend. Everyone but Kaiser was able to clear the tracks at the end of the trestle. The train struck Kaiser, who was thrown into a ravine.
