July 22nd-30th

Bigger.  Better.  Stinkier?  We'll see.

This year hosted by our beloved Austin Cosmopolitan Rotary Club, we will launch our 3rd annual (and infamous) Shower Strike on July 22nd.  Our launch party will include live music from two very hot bands, mega raffle prizes and general great fun.

We have individuals and teams from all over the states who have already enlisted- as well as from Canada, Australia and England.  Our goal this year is to recruit over 100 Strikers.  And we can do it with your help!

Being a part of the Shower Strike is very easy... and stinkin' fun!

We even have a website dedicated to the event this year- where you can sign up to Strike with us!  (To sign up, select the green "Create Fundraising Page Now" button.

You can also learn more detail about the strike on the event website.

It's simple to take part.  It's a great time.  It saves lives.

Stay tuned for more events and volunteer opportunities that we are still developing!

Greetings!

It's been a few months since we have emailed a newsletter.  We are very busy here, and that's a great thing!

We just returned from a trip to Kenya last month to audit our projects from 2010 and evaluate new locations.  We did a lot in those 11 days!  If you missed our posts from the trip in the blog, you can still find them here .  (Lots of pics there, too.)

It was magical to be able to see and touch the results of our work for the people of Kenya.  We are more inspired than ever by the compassion of our donors and volunteers to be able to make our projects a reality, as well as the incredible commitment and dedication of the people in the communities in which we work.

We have so much to report for the upcoming months for Well Aware!  We have a new project review and approval process that will soon be on our website, and we are still beefing up our infrastructure to be able to accommodate more work.  We also have some fantastic fundraising events and opportunities, including... hold for drum roll... Shower Strike 2011-  the biggest and best yet.

And finally, it's World Water Day today!  In honor of this very important 24 hours of recognition, we're inviting you to contribute to one of our upcoming water projects that desperately needs our help.  We hope you will please consider helping out.  You can find details below.

Thank you for taking your time to stay updated on our activity.  We are very proud to be working for you.

Sincerely,
Sarah

You Can Help Us Solve a Problem

In 1992, the UN designated March 22nd of each year as the World Day for Water in recognition of the increasingly important issues of water crisis and conservation.  They urge everyone to take this day to do something proactive to address water issues.

We invite you to take this opportunity to contribute a little to one of our upcoming projects in Kenya.  We have a special need for attention to our project in Maai Mahiu with Comfort the Children.

Last month, when we were in Kenya, we discovered that our borehole in Maai Mahiu would have to be delayed because the results from the groundwater analysis revealed that the water there is so high in salt and fluoride (and piping hot), that, untreated, is is unsuitable for drinking and farming.

We planned to complete this project this Spring, but  we were back to the drawing board.  With the help of members of CTC, as well as Rotary, we have learned what we need to add to this project in order to bring water to the center.  And, the center in Maai Mahiu (once they have water) will achieve:

- education and healthcare for special needs children

- skills training and fair employment of women

- community HIV/AIDS training

- community library

- community agricultural training

That is only the beginning.  Zane and the other remarkable members of CTC will begin to change the way charity is executed in Kenya with our help.

In order to bring water to this project, we will need a water purification system that is an additional expense of $15,000.  Piping water and rainwater collection are not an option in this area.

Every day that goes by that we are unable to provide water there means lost opportunities to help people in great need.

In honor of this day, we hope you will pitch in what you may have already spent on coffee today.

And, perhaps just forward this message on to one other person.

You can also view our Maai Mahiu image gallery on our website.

Thank you for taking the time to read our appeal.

For any additional information on Maai Mahiu or any or our projects, please feel free to email or call us any time.
