We want to send a very special thank you to our friend and founding member, Brio Yiapan, for her work toward creating Well Aware, and her inspiration for our cause.  Her energy and heart were valuable assets to our team.

Brio and Sarah founded Well Aware together in June of 2006, and their persistence and passion created the foundation for what is now a thriving and expanding nonprofit.

Brio has gone on to work on other endeavors, and we wish her success and happiness!

Catch Some Eyes and Wear Your Tees!

This was a lame attempt at wordplay with the advice, "Dot your "i's" and cross your "t's"."   Not great, sorry.

Nonetheless, these Well Aware T-shirts are a great way to support the cause and spread the word!

Dear  ,

We are so thrilled to report to you that we completed our second water well in Namanga last month!  This area of Southern Kenya will now have access to clean drinking water for years to come because of your generous support and continued care for this cause.  These are the faces you have helped change for years to come.

If you missed out on our frequent accounts in the blog of our work and activities while we were there, you can still check out all of the posts here (including the day we hit that beautiful water!).

Well Aware is very excited and optimistic about our next undertakings!
Check out our Projects and Infrastructure Update below for our future involvement in Nkoilale and Maai Mahiu, as well as the other water projects we are honored to be considering in the coming months.

Our next Newsletter will include our upcoming fundraisers and some more interesting Well Aware news!

We deeply appreciate you for enabling us to make a real change for the people of Kenya.

Sincerely,
Well Aware

Another shout-out to our incredible Shower Strikers of 2010...  Thank you so very much for helping us help Namanga!  They would not have water without you.

Projects and Infrastructure Update

Our New Projects

Even though Well Aware has historically drilled water wells, as we are gaining knowledge about new areas and greater possibilities, as well as partnering with additional experts, we will be undertaking projects for providing water of varying types, including drilling.

Going forward, our new detailed due diligence review for project consideration will determine how we can best provide water for people in true need with the most impact and sustainability for each community we serve on a case by case basis.

We are also very optimistic to be teaming up with other Austin nonprofits working in Kenya who have experience and expertise in the needs of communities there after water.  As we continue to learn about Kenya and our potential to help there, we have discovered that a common problem in the nonprofit sector here and abroad is an overabundance of individual nonprofits working independent of each other, which has resulted in an inefficient use of our efforts, donations and resources, as well as a great risk to accountability.

Well Aware is initiating a collaboration of local efforts directed toward help in Kenyan communities in great need of our combined efforts.  We will be reporting more to you about the water projects we are considering with these partners as they develop!

We believe that these joint endeavors can be a model that we can duplicate throughout Kenya, and possibly other countries in Africa.  We want to  affect a very real and lasting change for Kenya, ensuring that after the water is there, other needs of Kenyans that follow are also met so that they become self-sustaining, with a truly greater opportunity to survive, thrive, and prosper.

Nkoilale
Located in a very rural area West of Nairobi and North of the Maasai Mara, this community has been in living in devastating conditions until now.  This part of Kenya is very special to Well Aware, since it is the region in which one of our original founding members was born, and it was the inspiration for the inception of our cause.  We have always hoped to be able to aid this community and provide life-saving water for a previously very desperate people.

On our visit there, we were to thrilled to learn that another organization called Stitching Nkoilale has been working in this area for several years rebuilding the primary school and erecting a community center, in addition to launching a sophisticated water project.  The pipeline system, that feeds from a plentiful natural spring, is already pouring water into a 100,000 liter tank.

With Well Aware's help, and the assistance of other organizations, this community of approximately 2000 people can have access to more water than five wells could provide.  We received copies of all of the paperwork granting the structures and access to the community this week, as well as some amazing pictures of the water project in Nkoilale that you can view on the blog here.

We are working now with Stitching Nkoilale on the Nkoilale community water project and considering our future involvement there.

Maai-Mahiu
Northwest of Nairobi, this small town is currently the home of Comfort the Children's (another Austin nonprofit) community development project.  Here, they take in children with special needs, who would otherwise be neglected by their families, and provide for them education and medical attention.

This facility also provides skills training for the mothers of these children, as well as HIV/AIDS training for the entire community, tree planting projects, and holistic community development.  You can see more about CTC on their website here.

This facility now has the opportunity to expand to be able to serve many more children and the community as a whole, and Well Aware will be able to provide water for this amazing new project that will be available to the entire community of 40,000 people.

Watoto
If you were keeping up with our blog when we were in Kenya last, you read about the children's home and self-sustaining orphanage and farm where we volunteered.  The director there has facilitated an amazing small model for saving children from horrible conditions, providing education and love, employing local community members, growing their own food, and creating their own fuel.

We believe that a larger scale duplication of this model can be exponentially as effective for this community, not just saving lives, but creating bright futures for hundreds of abandoned and sick children, and Well Aware hopes to be able to provide the borehole that could initiate this possibility.

If you would like to read about our time at Watoto, you can do so in our blog here.  You can also visit the website of the original project here.

Other Communities

We have received many requests from additional communities that we are still reviewing, and we will report these to you, as well, as we know that we will be able to help there!

Our New Organizational Infrastructure

We are very proud to be currently building a Board of Directors of ethical, experienced, diverse and professional people who will be making our very important decisions as a growing nonprofit.  If you are interested in knowing more about our Board, please just let us know.

Our team of Officers and Volunteers is also expanding, and we hope to be able to operate with even more efficiency and collaborative effort.  But, of course, we can always use additional help!  If you would like to know more about helping out, please email Sarah at sarah@wellawareworld.org.

With the help of professional volunteers and a great deal of research, we now have a set of thorough Organizational Procedures, including project selection due diligence and accountability assurance, as well as quarterly financial and fundraising audits.  We will soon have our Procedures available on our website for you to view.

But, don't let the new structure bore you- that's just the inside of Well Aware.  We are a group full of even more passion and creativity than ever before.  We will not fail to continue to amuse and surprise you!

Please always contact us with any questions and input!  You can simply reply to this email, or email Sarah at sarah@wellawareworld.org.  You can also call our office at 512.322.0004.
