AUSTIN,
TX, JUNE 10, 2010: Members of local nonprofit, Well Aware, are
holding their 2nd Annual Shower Strike from June 18th through June 26th. You are probably familiar with this
nonprofit's innovative ways of gaining attention to their cause to raise
awareness and funds for life-saving water wells in rural Kenya.
Last
year's Shower Strike attracted the attention of several local media and raised
$25,000 in the one week fundraising event.
This year's Strike has already recruited more than double the Strikers
from last year, including individuals from other locations, such as Taos,
Colorado Springs, New York City, Los Angeles, Fort Lauderdale, and Washington
D.C., and Well Aware expects to raise at least twice the proceeds this year.
For the week of the Shower Strike, volunteer Strikers will
be vowing not to shower until they have each raised one thousand dollars for
the cause. This outrageous fund-raiser, done
only by Well Aware, is an attempt to call attention to the necessity of water
and raise the funds to alleviate the monumental suffering that has resulted
from a deadly drought in Africa.
Our First Event will be our Shower Strike Launch Party, held at Moltov, 719 West 6th Street, on Friday, June 18th, from 7pm-10pm. We will kick off the strike and drum up
attention for the cause and expect to recruit more Shower Strikers there. Most of the local Strikers will be in
attendance, as well as local representatives and community leaders. The event will include Dancing Roller
Skaters, DJ Matt Giles, food and beverage and a presentation by Well
Aware.
The local Shower Strikers will also be congregating
throughout the week of the Strike to "make a stink" at events such at KGSR's
Blues on the Green on Wednesday, June 23rd, and Whole Foods'
(downtown location) Sunset Cinema on Friday, June 25th.
Our Strike is also being sponsored by various companies,
including Zing Caffeinated Water and Bee Cave Drilling. Each Striker will have their own Page on Facebook to promote their Striking and
need for funds. People may make
donations to each individual directly to that page, or to our website, or in
cash.
Strikers are encouraged to "stink it up" wherever and
whenever they can during the week of our Strike to raise awareness for this
event. A clean drink of water is a
luxury where we need to drill a well, a shower is unheard of. It's the least we can do to skip ours for a
week, so that others can simply survive.
