PTA Vision... Making every child's potential a reality.

Dear WES Wildcat Families,
A warm welcome back to all of you from the winter
holidays! It seems we're never sure these days if we're going to have warm and sunny
recesses or a sudden cold front, so make sure everyone is dressed for the weather!
Lots of things will be coming up in the next few
months. Keep in contact with your teachers to get the latest and greatest news on things
like book fair, Valentine's parties, Open Houses, TAKS tests, and other important
events!
Another thing to keep in mind is the importance of your
voice in upcoming decisions for the school district over the next months. We'll have three school board member positions open in the next election. Having a school board, like ours, which consistently listens carefully to various issues,
understands the ramifications of decisions, explores options, etc. is so critical to the
smooth functioning of the district. Be
sure to stay well informed regarding those elections.
Also, as was
discussed at our first PTA meeting of the year, there will be a tax
ratification election in the fall. Thus far, over 300 districts in Texas
have gone out for tax elections to meet the budget shortfalls. Without the change proposed in this election, the district budget will be 18 million in the
red, which will certainly mean significant change in what we are able to offer to our
students. Please make sure you stay well informed on these issues and come out to
vote in the fall!
Calling all children turning five by September 1st! We will be starting our
kindergarten registration early this year in
February. Please watch for notices
and mention registration to any neighbors who may not
have the information!
We'd also like to ask for a little help on your end with
cars out front. Please
continue to leave those ten minute spots open clear up to
dismissal time, even
if you regularly arrive early for dismissal. Those are designed for people to park
quickly and run in to pick up a sick child, drop off/pick
up an item, etc. and
should be left open. Additionally, it would be tremendously helpful if you would
remind your children daily about any changes in how they
are getting home AND that they should come out promptly to meet you at
dismissal time if you are picking up! You'd be
amazed at how slowly a few kids can walk when they're chattering away about important things in their lives while you are
waiting in the front circle!
We're looking forward to a wonderful second semester with
your children. We have the best jobs in the world, being able to come here every
day and work with our students!

Principal

Top 4 Wellington Volunteer Needs
1. Book Fair
Volunteers
Book Fair is
coming up and we are looking for volunteers to help! The Book
Fair runs from February 18th through February 24th. The
Book Fair will be open for Literacy Night on February 19th as
well. We have during school, afterschool and evening time slots
available. Contact Kathryn Kelley at steveyeager@msn.com for volunteer opportunities.
2. The Carnival
is Coming!
The Wellington Elementary Carnival is scheduled for Friday, May 14 from 5:30pm
until 8:00pm. We need many volunteers to make this a great and fun event for
everyone. We are looking for a Chairperson to head up this committee, a Food
Organizer and a Game Coordinator. We also need many great volunteers to make it
go smoothly. So, if you are interested in working on this fun committee please
contact Traci Gentile at traci.gentile@gmail.com as soon as possible because the
committee will start planning soon!
3. Traffic Team Volunteers
Our Traffic Team
members walk around the school parking lot and the drop-off/pick-up lines
both before and after school. They help to ensure that traffic is moving
smoothly and safely. They offer friendly reminders to both parents and children
who may be unaware of or have forgotten our Wellington Elementary School
traffic guidelines. If you are interested in helping out by volunteering
to be a Traffic Team member please contact Don McDaniel at don.wespta@verizon.net.
4. Literacy
Night Room Greeters/Volunteers
We need about 12
Room Greeters for Literacy Night on February 19. We will have about 6 guest
readers that night. Each will have their own classroom. The kids will come and
go to each room to hear the readers. We will need a Room Greeter for each
room to basically oversee it and keep it moving. The Greeter will have to
decide when it's time to shut the door and get the reading started. They
will also introduce the author.
The readings will
run 5:30-8:30 pm. We will divide the volunteering time into two shifts: 5:30 -
7:00 and 7:00 - 8:30. We need to make sure we have someone available for the
readers at all times in the event they need assistance with something. If you
are interested in being a Room Greeter for Literacy Night, please contact Mary DeStasio
at m.destasio@verizon.net as soon as possible.

Volunteers of the Month - January and February
Volunteer of the Month for January - Sarasu
Manohar
Sarasu has
volunteered in the library at Wellington for 4.5 years. She helps out by
scheduling volunteers, shelving books, checking books in and out, covering new
books and volunteers at the book fairs. She is in the library nearly every
day!! Her passion for our library is wonderful! Thank you, Sarasu, for all of
your dedication to the library! It is really appreciated!

Volunteer of the Month for February - Jamie
Spence
Jamie and her
family are new to Wellington this school year. Jamie has jumped in and started
volunteering in many areas and always has a smile. She volunteers as a 3rd
Grade Room Rep, as the Volunteer Nametag Coordinator, on the Yearbook
Committee, a Copy Mom and on the Volunteer As Needed Committee. She is very
happy to help out and feels very lucky to be able to volunteer. She loves being
able to be a part of a school that has so much parental involvement. Thanks,
Jamie! We really appreciate all that you do!
Our Volunteer of
the Month is nominated by anyone at our school (staff, teachers, students or
other volunteers). They receive use of the "Volunteer of the Month" parking
spot in the front of the school and their bio and picture is placed on the PTA
board outside the front office. So, if you know of anyone who is doing a great
job as a volunteer please nominate them! We really want to recognize our
fantastic volunteers! Nomination forms can be found outside the front office in
the flyer bin by the PTA board.
** PLEASE BE
COURTEOUS AND DO NOT PARK IN THE VOLUNTEER OF THE MONTH PARKING SPOT. **

What is KidWorks?
KidWorks
is a safe, supportive place for
children who have experienced the divorce of their parents and its consequences. In the eight-week program provided without
charge at KidWorks, children and their
parents can share their experiences and express their feelings through play,
drama, art and other creative activities under the supervision of trained,
caring listeners.
Why provide support
services for children of divorce?
With an
attitude of "being strong" and "getting over it" toward children and families
dealing with divorce, our society places value on happiness, success and
health. Children of divorce may
feel "different" from their peers at school, church and sports. They may also feel the pressure to not
tell anyone (even in their family) how they think or feel. At KidWorks,
the shared circumstance of loss and major changes in their lives frees children
to explore, identify and express themselves and to heal from the trauma of
divorce. Children of divorce who
internalize their personal experience and do not have adequate support may
experience depression, school adjustment problems, substance abuse, or other
coping problems.
Who should come to KidWorks?
Children ages
5-18 and adults who are trying to cope with the results of divorce will find
others like themselves at KidWorks. Groups are divided 5-8, 9-12, 13-18 and
adults. Parents or guardians
accompanying KidWorks children have a
support group of their own to discuss the special needs of their children, effective
parenting skills and the needs of parents dealing with the aftermath of a
divorce.
What will a program
participant do at KidWorks?
Group sharing,
art activities, puppets, drama, and play, are some of the activities that
trained facilitators will companion children through. Facilitators are trained to listen to children and respond
in an encouraging, supportive manner.
Children can paint, draw, and recreate stories.
What is the difference
in support for children of divorce and counseling?
Support
services are not treatment. They
are not counseling. Support is
listening, being present to children as they share thoughts & experiences,
express feelings and ask important life situation questions. Support includes trusting that a child
will share and heal when given a safe environment in which to do this
work. It can even be fun. Children of divorce are not "broken"
and do not need "fixing." They
need to be given a place where they feel comfortable enough to express their
deepest hurts.
Children and
families needing additional special services will be referred to licensed
professional counselors in CounselingWorks.
