Conference Minister's Message

Greetings!

Blessings and much joy to you in this New Year, fresh with hope in the birth of God's love in Christ and fresh with days to share thanks and praise for all God's wonderful gifts.

You have probably heard about the ecumenical and international partnerships that tie the Wisconsin Conference to churches in Germany, Honduras, England, Mexico, and Brazil.  You may wonder about the value of these partnerships and question what role they play in today's world.  I simply want to share with you the following excerpts from a Christmas email from one of our guests from Germany who was part of the Gospel Choir from Eberswalde (north of Berlin) who visited and toured in Wisconsin in October.  It expresses the power of these experiences better than anything I could ever say:

ScrollI am sitting in front of our Christmas tree. We had a nice dinner together....  The kids and ladies have got their presents and my son played some classical guitar Christmas songs. It is indeed a blessed feast.  All my wishes to you and all the best for the coming year and many to follow.

Reflecting back to my journey to the States, singing together with you and worshiping the lord of Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Mohamed I am deeply thankful, that I could participate in this inspiring event.  How much the world would be more peaceful, if all mankind would recognize that we all are sons of Adam and that we all praise the Lord in one way or the other.  My gratitude to have been part in all this cannot be said in any imaginable words.

Moreover you know that I also am of Arab origin.  Your kindness and unbelievable hospitality has eradicated all prejudices I had built up against Americans.  I know that much mischief is going on in political and military scale, but you all... have shown me another face of your country and culture I never ever heard of, except of my mum, who kept telling me that the Americans are a deep religious and generous folk.  She passed away some years ago. I would love to tell her, that she had been so right.

In peace love and harmony and prayers for global understanding and love I wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy new coming year.

It is not possible to tell when cross-cultural exchange experiences will have an impact like this one.  This gracious note gives foundation to the scriptures (Hebrews 13:2) that tell us:  Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

Many blessings,

David Moyer, Conference Minister

Church Helps Hoarder Get Her Home Back
By Lauren Leamanczyk, Today's Milwaukee 4

MILWAUKEE - When you walk into Cee's condo, your first dilemma is where to stand.  Every inch is covered with piles of art supplies, scrollscrafting projects and other knick knacks.

Cee does not want us to share her full name, but did invite us into her home.  The city has turned off the water and heat and padlocked the door because Cee's condo has been determined to be uninhabitable and a fire hazard.

Bright Stars of Bethlehem Invite You to Meet Online

Watch The Video

Bright Stars of Bethlehem is a partnership between the Southwest Association of the Wisconsin Conference and the Christmas Lutheran Church in Bethlehem which began in 2003.  Their pastor, Rev. Mitri Raheb, was the featured speaker at a workshop prior to Annual Meeting in 2009.The goals of the partnership are to increase awareness of Palestinian Christians, pray for and support the Lutheran church in Bethlehem and offer opportunities to travel to the Holy Land and meet people whose lives are affected by the ministry of the church.

This Bethlehem partnership has been an important vehicle to help us understand the global nature of faith.  The Wisconsin Conference would like to widen the circle by inviting others to an online exploration and association
.

We invite you to join us for four Wednesday afternoon meetings at 1:30 p.m., held online through WebEx. February 16, March 2, 16, 30.

For leaders considering a new church start!

Is new church planting for me?

Paul Nickerson
Paul Nickerson

Across the United Church of Christ, there is increasing interest in starting new churches.  To accomodate those considering a call to do so, these discernment retreats are offered with the goal of developing a pool of clergy and lay persons who are ready to respond to a call for new church start ministry.

In this workshop:

  • Gain greater clarity around how God has wired you.
  • Understand leadership style.
  • Learn the questions to ask to clarify your call to consider a new church start.
  • Align your call, vision and behaviors to starting a church.
  • If not church planting, then what?
