From the Desk of the Head of School
The choice of a college and career is perhaps one of the most difficult decisions a person will make in life. Is it any wonder that anxiety disorders emerge in more eighteen to twenty-somethings than in any other age range?
It is our privilege as a school to help guide and direct our students as they embark on life's journey. At North Hills, we desire to help each and every student achieve his or her full God-given potential. So, this month, I would like to share with our school community some thoughts and tips on how to prepare for college entrance. While planning may differ for each student, there are some common threads that I believe are valuable for all students and parents to learn.
1) How colleges make decisions-
It is a common mistake to think that the most elite colleges seek applicants with the highest SAT scores and GPA's. While it is certainly critical to have strong scores in these areas, it is important to understand that these are but two of many variables that play into an admissions decision. One of our parents recently introduced me to
an incredible blog that I would like to share with you. I urge you to
watch the Today Show video posted under February 16 at http://thechoice.blogs.nytimes.com/ for a succinct look into what the elite schools consider. You will quickly discover that the admissions process involves so much more than test scores and high school Grade Point Averages! Among many other variables, colleges may even consider race, home state, participation in service and leadership activities, quality and content of the college essay, and relative difficulty of high school coursework (in other words, what courses did the student take in relationship to the courses their high school offered). Since the factors in an admission decision vary widely, I always urge students to find out as much as they can about the colleges to which they apply and tailor the admissions package to what the school is seeking in a candidate for the given year.
2) How to compare colleges-
Have you ever visited www.usnews/rankings? This is a great resource where you can find a comprehensive list and ranking of the nation's colleges and universities. The site provides a glimpse into the relative quality of each college, as well as descriptive data, outlining the composition of the student body; the percentage of applicants who are accepted for admission each year; photos of the facilities; as well as information about the school calendar, athletic programs, and an institutional description.
3) How do I choose a major or a career?-
When a student asks this question, my first piece of advice is "Do not worry about it!" Okay, so that is a bit more flippant than I mean it to be, but it makes a point. Many students are concerned that, if they do not declare a major immediately upon entering college, then they are somehow at a disadvantage. Yet, we have all heard forty year olds say, "I don't know what I want to be when I grow up!"
In the end, what matters is that you keep walking! I am in my position as school administrator because I minored in music in college. When I tell students this, they look at me with wide eyes and say, "Really?" Yes. I was one of seventeen applicants for a Bible teaching position at North Hills Christian School, and I was chosen at least partly because I brought enough college credits to teach a music class NHCS needed to offer at the time. The rest is history. Our God orders our steps, so keep walking in full confidence of His grace and sovereignty.
Besides, what is the harm in exploring many majors before committing tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours to one major? Of course, in order to select a college, you need a general idea of your interests: are you a math / science kind of student? Then go to a math / science college or university. Do you enjoy literature and performing arts? Then find a school that offers both.
For career exploration resources, we highly recommend the ASVAB, which NHCS administers to juniors and seniors on an every other year basis. Additionally, there are several other career assessment tools listed under the "College Planning" section of our website at www.northhillschristian.com/guidance.html.
4) SAT / ACT preparation-
Although the SAT or ACT score is not the sole criteria for deciding a college admission, there are perhaps few variables that are more important. I urge students to begin preparing early for these exams. Obtain an SAT practice book from a local bookstore or library and read about test-taking strategies and take practice exams, but know that the content of these books can only go so far! They will certainly help improve a score, but the bottom line is that you must know the content that was taught in high school. If you miss a concept, get extra help! If you are several years out from when that tricky Geometric concept was first taught to you, then borrow a geometry textbook, go back, and review it. Read a lot. Study harder for your core academics. There is little that can prepare you better than these disciplines.
5) Should I take the SAT or ACT? When?-
Take them both! Some students are inclined to do well on one, while others will excel on the other. See which one suits you, and then take it again! Colleges will take your highest scores from these tests, so I urge every student to take them at least twice--once as a second semester junior, and once as a first-semester senior. Also, if you are applying to a more selective or highly selective school (50% acceptance or fewer), you may also want to consider taking some SAT subject-area tests. Consult with your college admissions officer or our administrative staff for guidance.
6) How will we pay for college?-
Visit our school's guidance webpage at www.northhillschristian.com/guidance.html, and click on the links in the bottom left section under "College Guidance" to explore search engines that will help lead you to available scholarship funds!
7) Need help with the FAFSA?-
Every college will urge you to complete the Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure you stay on top of your deadlines, and ask for help!
8) Why should I apply early?-
For many of the more selective colleges, you are more likely to obtain admission if you apply for early decision. It often costs a bit more, but it's worth it to go to the college or university of your choice. Stay in frequent contact with your college admissions counselor for more information.
Mrs. Pullen and I are currently meeting with each of our high school students to discuss college and career planning options on a student-by-student basis. For additional assistance, or to get help with high school course selections at NHCS that will best equip you for what you will do after high school, please do not hesitate to contact us. It is our pleasure to serve you! |

NHCS Accepted into the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA); New Varsity Men's Head Coach
North Hills Christian School's varsity athletic program has been accepted into the Southern Piedmont Athletic Association (SPAA), a conference of the North Carolina Independent School Athletic Association (NCISAA). The SPAA is comprised of some of the highest profile teams in the state, including United Faith Christian Academy, Davidson Day School, Gaston Day School, Statesville Christian School, and Victory Christian Center School. NHCS began the SPAA application process early last summer. "Competing in this conference will allow us to play at the state level and gain more visibility for our athletes," said NHCS Athletic Director Chris Fowler.
New Varsity Men's Head Coach, Dadrian Cuthbertson, Looking Forward to Competing in SPAA
Coach Dadrian Cuthbertson, who assisted head coach Jason Causby in 2010-2011 assumed the Varsity Men's Basketball Head coaching position February 25, 2011. "I'm looking forward to competing in the SPAA where every team has Division 1 level players on it," Coach Cuthbertson said.
Coach Causby resigned in February to accept a position as head of the exceptional children department at Salisbury High School and to pursue his goal of obtaining licensure as a school administrator--a master's level program that must be completed in conjunction with teaching in a public school. "We fully support Coach Causby and his decision to further his career plans," said NHCS Athletic Director Chris Fowler. "We wish him well." Cuthbertson played basketball for four years at West Rowan High School, and was a varsity starter for three of those years. While at West Rowan, he received numerous awards such as All Conference (Yadkin Valley), All County, MVP of the Sam Moir Christmas Tournament in 1992, and All District in 1994. He is director of the ABC Youth Development basketball skills training program that provides basketball clinics for young people in the community. His passion is building relationships with young kids and helping them grow to become better individuals. "I like the school. I like the people I'm working with," Cuthbertson said. "I see that the North Hills faculty and staff really care about the kids and want to see them succeed. I'm all about the kids," he added.
Coach Cuthbertson coaches AAU basketball and has worked in the summer program at Catawba College. He has significant experience coaching at the high school level including two years as junior varsity men's basketball coach at West Rowan High School and four years as assistant coach of the varsity team at Carson High School.
"Coach Cuthbertson has the experience and expertise to help us move our program forward, " said Head of School Matt Mitchell. "He has already established a strong rapport with NHCS students and families and gained their respect," Mitchell added. Cuthbertson is married to Tameka. They have two children-- D'Ajua and Malon. |

Kim and Connie Starnes
| | Left to right: Kim Starnes, Connie Starnes, Head of School Matt Mitchell, Ron Jernigan from Monsanto |
Former NHCS parents Kim and Connie Starnes were excited to see North Hills Head of School, Matt Mitchell, accept a check for $2,500 from Monsanto Territory Sales Manager, Ron Jernigan in February. Kim and Connie won a national contest sponsored by Monsanto, an organization that supports rural communities. The winner of the contest could designate a non-profit of their choice to receive a $2,500 contribution. The Starnes chose North Hills. NHCS will use the money for our Annual Fund that supports things like professional development training for teachers, technology enhancements, tuition assistance, and facility improvements. Thank you Kim, Connie, and Monsanto. We appreciate your support!
