Fall Funfest a tremendous success

Fall Funfest

Three hundred North Hills Christian School students and families turned out for the school's Fall Funfest on Saturday, October 23.  This was the first year for this family-oriented schoolwide fellowship event, which included a chili cookoff and dodgeball tournament.  Families brought in crockpots filled with their very best chili concoctions.  Entries included chili beans, white chicken chili, vegetarian chili, and more.  After tasting these delightful creations, students and adults formed teams and dressed up in team "uniforms" (costumes) for the dodgeball tournament competition.  Young students duked it out on an outdoor court while the older students and adults competed in the gym.  Coach Chris Fowler was m.c. for the event.  "This event is a keeper," said Head of School, Matt Mitchell.  "It was a fun-filled afternoon of friendly competition for all ages and a great opportunity for us to gather together as a school family," Mitchell said.

NHCS Students Honor Pastors

Pastor Appreciation 2010

Have you thanked your pastor lately?  North Hills students made a special effort to honor their pastors on October 12.  About 25 pastors gathered for coffee and refreshments in the school's media center before making their way to the Helen Kelley Smith Gymnasium to enjoy a special program presented by students in grades 3K  through sixth grade.  There were lots of smiles as the pastors filed into the gym.  Students recognized the faces of the special men and women who give so much of themselves to serve their Lord, churches, and congregations.

The preschoolers began the program with pledges as they do each school morning with an enthusiastic, "Ready, salute, pledge!"  Each class then presented something special for the group of guests.  Mrs. Susan Colosanti's third grade class presented an acrostic using  the word "pastor" and decided that pastors are:

Patient and powerful

Awesome and active

Successful and sweet

Travelers and truth tellers

Obedient to God and outstanding

Realistic and responsible

Sacrificing and satisfactory.

Some classes sang special songs.

A second grade boy saw tears in the eyes of one pastor and remarked that he saw a pastor "crying out of joy and love."

The last presentation from sixth grade lightened the mood.  It featured power point slides with statements students made about their pastors.  One student said, "I will always remember when she was with my grandmother in the hospital."  Another student commented, "I will always remember when he put a 'for sale' sign in a church member's yard while they were out of town."

After the program ended, students gave their cards and other tokens of appreciation to their pastors.  They also shared hugs and made photos with their special guests.

holding signs that said "thank you."

NHCS Student Attends

National Leadership Conference

Michael Jones, an NHCS sophomore, was elected by more than 250 of his peers to "become president" during the National Youth Leadership Conference, a program designed to cultivate future political leadership by providing students with opportunities to deepen their understanding of the intricacies of the United States government.

During his visit to Washington, D.C., Jones prepared a compelling speech, which won over his "constituents" to vote him in as president.

The group stayed at the National 4-H Centre in Chevy Chase, Maryland, where they also visited several points of interest in and around the nation's capital.  Sites visited included the Capitol, Senate Gallery, and Georgetown.  Jones met Howard Coble and Richard Burr, and enjoyed the opportunity to ride the underground Capitol subway system.  Congratulations Michael, and way to represent NHCS!

He and more than 250 other students from dozens of states participated in a Presidential simulation, simulations of the Supreme court and a town hall, as well as a model of Congress.
