North Hills High School Students Win Honors at North Carolina Bar Association Competition

we the people

High school students from North Hills Christian School in Salisbury won 4th place and received honorable mention in the state's national "We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution" competition, which was held in Raleigh on March 4, 2010.

The congressional hearing-style competition for high school students was created in
1987 to improve civic competence and responsibility among students.  Students presented one of three prepared four-minute speeches on various topics related to the Constitution ranging from philosophy, the Constitutional Convention, and modern day social and political issues.  A panel consisting of judges, senators, and attorneys rated the students' presentations and questioned them for six minutes.

North Hills placed fourth overall in the competition and one group of students from NHCS-- Abby Lane, Natalie Whicker, Brooke Arrowood and Nathan Wyatt-- received honorable mention.  NHCS history teacher, Chris Price, led the group and was complimented by the judges on how the NHCS students presented during the competition.

Students created 3-5 minute videos based on the theme of the contest, "North Carolina: A Catalyst for a More Perfect Union."  The students were challenged to answer various questions.  "W
hat is it about our state that embodies the ideals of our Founding Fathers?"  "What is it about our state that demonstrates liberty and justice for all?"  "What is it about North Carolina that shows how far our nation has come, and serves as a catalyst for where our nation needs to go?"

Empty Bowls: NHCS Art Department Raises $2,700 for Rowan Helping Ministries

empty bowls
The North Hills Christian School (NHCS) art department and students put their creativity into action recently to help feed the hungry in our area.  Students and art instructors joined forces with local potters and area sponsors to raise money for Rowan Helping Ministries.  Together, they brought in $2,700 at the Empty Bowls soup dinner fundraiser.

Members of North Hills Christian School's Daughters of the King organization and other student groups served soup donated by Debbie Suggs Catering, bread donated by DJ's Restaurant, and iced tea donated by L. A. Murph's.  In exchange for a donation, patrons could enjoy the soup dinner and select a hand crafted ceramic bowl made by NHCS students, teachers, and local potters.  The empty bowls were a symbol of appreciation and intended to remind patrons of the empty bowls that their donations helped fill.  This was the second year for the event.

A Year of Blessing!

It has been another blessed year for our faculty, staff, students, and families as we experienced more of the wonderful things that the Lord continues to do in our midst here at North Hills Christian School.  What a privilege it is to be part of such a warm, Christian school community--one that is excelling in academics, athletics, and technologically as we move forward and achieve our strategic goals for the future.  It is even more exciting to see the impact NHCS is having on the lives of young people who sit in these classrooms and walk through these hallways as they learn about God's world and serve Him.  They are forever changed-- all for the glory of Christ.  It is an extraordinary education that is distinctly Christian.  It is an extraordinary place!

Mr. Dave Davis, the one hundred year-old founder of our school, went to be with the Lord this year and he will be deeply missed.  Mr. Davis said many times that the Lord has always provided for North Hills Christian School and He always will.  We recently celebrated our annual Vision Banquet, in which we raised more than $40,000.  With a sizable gift from the Mona and Lee Wallace Foundation in the last days of our Annual Fund Campaign, we met our goal this year!  Blessings to each of you who so willingly gave to support our school's mission this year.  As we wrap up a year in which we expreienced tremendous enrollment growth and generous giving, join us in celebrating the theme of this year's annual fund campaign: "Wonders of God among us!"

American Red Cross Blood Drive   red cross

May 14, 2010, the Red Cross blood drive collected twenty-four units of blood at North Hills Christian School.  Two students and seven faculty members donated, two of whom were first time donors.  Many thanks to Kathy Teodorvici and students who volunteered to work, as well as those who donated food and drinks.  Thanks to our faculty and staff, students, and parents for donating!

Raising Another Ebenezer:

A Message from Mr. Mitchell, our Head of School

In the back to school update for this past year, I recounted the biblical narrative of I Samuel 7.  In this part of God's Word, the nation of Israel finds herself under siege by foreign armies.  On behalf of God's people, Samuel cries out to our Lord for protection, and God hears Samuel's cries.  The Philistines were defeated and quickly retreated.  The Israelites quickly erected a large stone monument-an "Ebenezer"-as a reminder of His faithfulness.  The word "Ebenezer" means "stone of help."  The raising of an Ebenezer was a powerful Old Testament reminder of God's faithfulness to His people.

I was reminded of this passage at the beginning of school because of the many ways God had been so good to NHCS.  Like the Israelites, may we always remember His faithfulness to our school!  As 2009-2010 draws to a close, I return to the place where we started: may we again raise a mental Ebenezer-a monument to our God.  This year brought some of the most difficult economic times our country has ever faced.  Yet, NHCS remains strong, vibrant, and growing.  Praise God!

I look forward to reporting more at the end of the summer about His provisions for 2010-2011.  In the meantime, may He richly bless you and your families as you enjoy a season of rest this summer.
