Teal Center Therapists Attend the
2010 Oncology Massage Healing Summit ~
On April 30th and May 1st Teal Center therapists, Lucille Eddy and Rebecca Hardy, along with several other DC area oncology massage therapists, attended the Second Oncology Massage Healing Summit at Northwestern Health Sciences University in Bloomington, Minnesota.
Co-sponsored by the Society for Oncology Massage, the summit included presentations of current research as well as educational sessions for massage therapists who specialize in working with patients during and after cancer treatment. Leaders in the field of oncology massage presented a wide variety of topics including, "Strengthening Immunity with Bodywork," "Massage for Children with Cancer," and "The Science Behind Gentle Touch for People with Cancer."
Many Teal Center therapists, in addition to their comprehensive training in massage therapy, have completed additional "post-graduate" training in oncology massage. This advanced training addresses a broad spectrum of cancer-related issues such as the physical consequences of cancer, the psycho-social and emotional consequences, and the side effects of various treatments. Oncology massage therapists have learned to adapt massage therapy techniques to work safely and effectively with people living with cancer. Patients report that massage therapy during cancer treatment helps alleviate pain, fatigue and anxiety.
