BrendaDear Friends,

If you are one of the thousands of runners in the DC area gearing up for this Fall's big races, the Army 10 Miler on October 4th or the Marine Corps Marathon on October 25th, we are here to help you sustain your training during this final push month. A good sports massage will help speed recovery after hard workouts and keep you on the road, ready to go the distance on race day. Let us help give you that performance edge!

And now, at The Teal Center at Virginia Hospital Center, Debbie Wickenheiser is offering KinesioTaping to support your training and help you perform your best. Call for an appointment with Debbie to see how this technique can help you.  703-558-5454.

In addition to the big Fall races, September also brings the excitement of back to school. Check out the article below for some tips to help support your health and vitality through the school year.

Wishing you all the best,
Brenda Teal

Massage Therapy Supports Marathon Training~

Runner

Prevent injury and recover quickly from hard workouts

Have you ever had that heavy, dead feeling in your legs after a long run?  That's when a good sports massage will put the spring back in your step and the stretch back in your stride so you can stay on your training schedule without injury or pain.

Support recovery from minor injuries

Rather than lettng a minor injury such as a muscle pull hinder your training, address it quickly with massage therapy.  Chances are, you'll be pain free and back on the road quickly.

Sports massage incorporates various massage techniques
  • stretching
  • compression
  • cross fiber friction
  • deep tissue
  • lymphatic techniques

You will see results as the massage
  • improves range of motion
  • improves circulation and flexibility
  • reduces swelling
  • softens scar tissue
  • releases muscle spasm
  • helps you relax and focus

Fun Fact ~
September is National Honey Month!

honey
Honey is a great source of quick energy, and unlike refined sugar, it contains traces of important minerals and antioxidants, making is a healthier way to indulge your sweet tooth, and your need for quick energy.  The Greeks invented the first energy bar with their sesame honey sweet, pasteli.  Here's a simple recipe to try.  Take some with you on your next run, or tuck one in the school lunchbox for a special treat.
Back to School Health Tips

Start off on the right foot:

Sometimes just getting out of bed to go to school is the hardest part of the day.  Make getting up more fun with music.  Take the stress out of deciding what to wear by picking out school clothes the night before. Here's a good idea I came across recently:  lure kids out of bed on a chilly morning by warming their clothes in the dryer.  They'll jump out of bed quickly to get into the warm clothes before they cool off.

Eat a good breakfast:

Finding time before dashing off to school is sometimes a challenge, but a nutritious breakfast provides the energy and focus everyone needs to meet the challenges of the day. Mix it up with quick, easy and delicious fruit smoothies, english muffin pizzas, yogurt-fruit-granola parfaits. My family loves old fashioned oatmeal with cinnamon, raisins, walnuts and apple chunks!

Stay healthy during flu season:

Wash your hands often throughout the day.
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
Don't share glasses or eating utensils.
Keep your immune system strong by eating well and getting plenty of rest.
Supplement your diet with immune boosting vitamins like vitamin C.
Drink plenty of water.
Stay home if you're not feeling well.

Use backpacks safely:

Children often experience neck, shoulder and back pain as the result of carrying a backpack that is too heavy for them.  To guard against muscle and joint injuries be sure backpacks weigh no more than 10 percent of a young child's body weight.  For an older and stonger child it is safe to carry up to 20% of body weight.  To avoid injury the backback should not be hanging down beyond the hips and must be carried using both straps, one over each shoulder with the load centered on the back.  Remind your child to bend at the knees when picking up the pack and to carry only what's necessary.

And have a wonderful school year!
