Dear Friends of Gratz College,

Our incredible staff is as busy as can be as they prepare for Fall. Among the new and exciting offerings are a certificate program in Holocaust and Genocide Studies and an exciting, all-new continuing education program called GratzàlaCarte. You will find all of the details in this issue of the Insider. Please check it out below!

Gratz College is such an amazing place... everywhere I go in Philadelphia, I run into Gratz alumni. I was shopping for carpet yesterday and learned that the salesperson had attended Gratz College. She proudly recounted that she graduated from the High School's Isaac Mayer Wise Program in 1974, and went on to teach in Hebrew School for the next 27 consecutive years! That is an amazing return on the community's investment in Gratz. There are 15 days remaining in our Annual Campaign. Please invest in the Jewish education of the next generation(s)!

Milestone for Czech Jewish Community

Unprecedented translation into Czech of Jewish text by

Gratz College professor, Dr. Joseph Davis

Dr. Joseph Davis

"The subject of my book, Yom-Tov Heller, was one of the greatest and most famous rabbis of Prague, second only, maybe, to the legendary Maharal of Prague, he of the Golem legend. Heller was in fact a disciple of Maharal, and my book deals with that period in Prague

Joe Davis Book

Jewish history, which is sometimes thought of (by Jews and also by non-Jews) as a sort of 'Golden Age.' So they thought there would be some interest among Czech readers. My translator is Pavel Sladek, a Jewish studies scholar who teaches at the Charles University in Prague. The translation includes several new sections that were not in the original English, including a new introduction that I wrote, and Czech translations of some of Heller's own writings, as well as an essay by Prof. Sladek. It is one of the first, and perhaps the very first, work of modern Jewish studies to be ever translated into Czech, and in that respect it marks a milestone for the Czech Jewish community.  I am certainly tremendously honored."  Dr. Joseph Davis

Sponsored by The Center for Jewish Education in conjunction with the Van Leer Jerusalem Institute, the international research workshop was held earlier this summer.

Look for Dr. Rela M. Geffen at Limmudfest Atlanta over Labor Day Weekend where she will be leading two sessions on the Jewish Family as viewed traditionally and as it is in America today. Dr. Geffen will also be moderating a panel on the status of women in Judaism in a format based on the TV show The View.
