Dear Friends,

Summer is hardly a lazy time at Gratz College! We have programs and projects in full gear and the Mandell Campus is buzzing with learners as we prepare for one of the most exciting times in our recent history.

Speaking of history, on June 21, 2011 the Board of Governors of Gratz College made history by naming the institution's tenth president, Joy W. Goldstein. Joy has been serving as COO and Acting CEO of the College and has done a wonderful job of driving the strategic planning process and bringing fiscal discipline to Gratz. I am thrilled that her new position recognizes and rewards her outstanding work on our behalf.

I look forward to hearing your reactions to our exciting programs and seeing you at our upcoming events.

Chairman, Board of Governors

Joy Goldstein

Gratz College Appoints New President

For the past year, Joy W. Goldstein (Gratz College High School, 1976) has been Chief Operating Office and Acting CEO. A long-time Philadelphia resident, Joy came to Gratz after an accomplished career in the non-profit sector, most recently as Vice President, Policy, Strategy and Funding for Jewish Federation of Philadelphia. As of June 21, Joy was appointed President to recognize her outstanding work and service to Gratz. Read about it in the Jewish Exponent!

Judaic Lodge Creates Legacy at Gratz College

The Judaic Lodge of Philadelphia recently contributed $158,000 to create a scholarship fund at Gratz College. Dating back to 1876, the Lodge was chartered as a Philadelphia chapter of the Free Sons of Israel, the oldest and still extant Jewish fraternal organization in the nation. By creating a legacy at Gratz College, the trustees of the Judaic Lodge recognize the importance of Jewish education and Gratz College. Read about it in the Jewish Exponent

Electric study

JCHS Online gets a jolt in the fall when our five years of successful online learning for high school students is renamed JOLT (Jewish Online Learning for Teens). In partnership with the Union for Reform Judaism, JCHS JOLT is launching a new program of post-confirmation study for 11th and 12th graders from Reform congregations. This national program includes online study and a retreat at a URJ camp for an experience that will be the best of both worlds. Contact Michael Schatz for more information.

Justice, Justice You Shall Pursue

Associate Dean of Students Tamara R. Cohen recently returned from ten days in Senegal as part of an American Jewish World Service-sponsored delegation that included students from around the United States. Tamara will share her experiences with the Gratz staff and student body and encourage others to participate because, she notes, "Gratz students are perfectly prepared for the pluralistic environment of the AJWS delegations and will have much to contribute and gain from this kind of international volunteerism."  Read more
