Springtime in Vermont - More Than Mud!
|
Shorts and bathing suits replaced ski jackets on the sun drenched slopes as the Northeast experienced temperatures reaching the mid 70's this season. Cornell University reported that the December to February period was the fourth warmest on record from Washington DC to Caribou, Me. Many major Vermont ski areas, including Stratton, closed on March 25th with most shutting down by April 1. Ticks be a bigger problem this year because we didn't have our usual prolonged cold periods. Yes, allergy sufferers are sniffing earlier because of the atypical warm weather. Enough about skiing and complaining. There is so much more that is positive. Vermont offers so much "out of season". Spend a relaxing, sunny afternoon kayaking our ponds and lakes. Trout fishing anyone? Its catch and release in the Battenkill, but you can always savor fresh fish in one of our fine restaurants later in the evening. The roads may still be a bit rough and in need patching so get out the mountain bike or hybrid for your first rides of the year. Check with the Green Mountain Club or the national forest rangers for hiking trial conditions and suggestions for a great spring hike. Wildlife abounds - see if you can catch a glimpse of many of our native species before the leaves are out.
