The Arts Mean Business in Wichita
Nonprofit arts and culture is a $66.2 million industry in Wichita that supports 2,006 jobs and generates $6.5 million in local and state government revenue.

That was some of the good economic news shared by Randy Cohen, vice president of Research and Policy for Americans for the Arts in Washington, D.C., during a visit to Wichita yesterday to speak to business, civic and arts leaders at a breakfast sponsored by The Arts Council. These tangible facts and figures are included in the just-released Arts & Economic Prosperity Report IV published by Americans for the Arts. Wichita was one of 186 cities to participate in the report that has been endorsed by the National Conference of State Legislatures, The United States Conference of Mayors, National Association of Counties, National League of Cities and other noted groups.

Keep these figures top of mind. That way when anyone asks you about the arts and their value to Wichita, you'll immediately have an answer that shows why arts organizations are businesses in their own right.

Summary of Findings.

American Indian Festival a cultural celebration for everyone to enjoy
The 2nd Annual American Indian Festival is less than a month away, and we hope July 14-15 is circled on your calendars! After all, it's the biggest event of the year for the Mid-America All-Indian Center, and everyone is invited.

If you're curious what you'll see, take a look at this video from last year at the same, great indoor location -- Century II Expo Hall.  We promise an unforgettable Contest Powwow, premiere Indian Fine Art Market and mouth-watering Indian tacos. And that's just some of what you can see and do.

Click here for hours and ticket prices or call (316) 350-3340. See you at July 14 and 15 at the American Indian Festival!

New Tipis Popular Attraction

The addition of three tipis to the Indian Center Museum have definitely caught the attention of some our littlest visitors who enjoy the opportunity to go inside and touch pieces that are connected to American Indian history.

Two new life-size tipis -- measuring 18 feet and 12 feet high -- can now be found outdoors in the Plains Indians Encampment Exhibit along with a grass house and natural habitat area. The exhibit shows how Plains Indians lived in the 1850s.

A small, kid-sized, eight-foot tipi (pictured above) will be kept inside in the Museum area to serve as a quiet reading space for children. It was hand-painted by local Elder Dan Herman, a Cherokee Indian, and his granddaughter Ivy. Plans are already in the works to build a bookshelf for the indoor tipi that is shaped like a fire pit.

Shawl-Making Class
The Indian Center is offering a "Beginning Shawl-Making" class at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23. The cost is $20 for members and $25 for non-members. To sign up, call (316) 350-3345.
