WeMakeArtHappen.com is a project supported by The Arts Council and the City of Wichita's Arts & Cultural Services Division. This website is a place where nonprofit arts organizations and individual artists put their projects before the public and ask individual citizens to become project partners. Think of it as a local version of Kickstarter.com.      

 

Right now, WeMakeArtHappen.com is accepting the next round of creative project proposals to post online. The projects must have a $500 minimum budget. Click here to learn more.

Fourth District Art Competition Attracts Top High School Artists 
First Place Entry "Self Portrait" by Wichita Northeast Magnet Senior Tamara Cummings will soon be on its way to the U.S. Capitol to be displayed for a year.  
The top entries in the Kansas Fourth District Congressional Art Exhibition are on display in the CityArts Main Hall through April 21. The show is sponsored by the Office of Congressman Mike Pompeo to recognize the artistic talents of high school students living in his district. ... The public is invited to a reception for the high school artists from 1-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21 at CityArts. Congressman Pompeo is scheduled to attend.

Spring Art Classes Continue

What are you doing the week of April 23rd? We hope you'll be at CityArts taking one of the more than 25 adult and youth classes that begin that week. Build Your Powwow Knowledge

"Men's Regalia" is the topic of the April 25 lecture. Participants will learn about the relationship between ceremonial clothing and different styles of dance.
The Mid-America All-Indian Center is saving a place for you at its Powwow Lecture Series. Lectures take place from 7-9 p.m. every other Wednesday April 25-June 13.

Each presentation focuses on a different aspect of powwows. The series is one way the Indian Center is getting the public ready for its 2nd Annual American Indian Festival, July 14-15 at Century II.

As an added bonus, the Indian Center gift shop and Museum will be open extended hours with free admission during the Powwow Series.

 

Festival Volunteers Needed     

The Indian Center is looking for individuals and groups to volunteer in various capacities for four-hour shifts during its American Indian Festival. Give staff a call, e-mail or stop in person for more information. Volunteer training sessions will be offered June 27 and 30 for anyone who is interested. All volunteers receive free admission to the festival.

Civil War With A Cowtown Twist
 
You haven't seen a Civil War battle until you've seen it fought at Old Cowtown Museum. Cowtown's annual Civil War Day will take place Saturday, April 21, and it includes a full day of activities and demonstrations from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Civil War Day is the kickoff event to Cowtown's Spring season.

 

Get ready for lots of action on the battlefield and the sounds of cannons and rifles all around. New additions to the schedule include a lecture by J.C. Combs on "Minstrel Shows of the Civil War Era" and a performance of Civil War-era spirituals by the ARISE singers.

Melodrama Tickets on Sale  
The next chance to enjoy melodrama theater at
Cowtown is May 11-12 and May 18-19 with the arrival of "Someone Save My Baby, Ruth! or Foil That Villain!" Tickets are on sale now for the 7 p.m. performances in Empire House Theater. They may be purchased online through WichitaTIX or by calling (316) 350-3323.

Don't wait too long to reserve your seat. The melodrama performances in March were near sellouts.

Melodrama is part of Cowtown's "Empire House Live!" 2012 concert/theater series. Keep up with all the events by bookmarking this page.

Special Exhibits  
Cowtown's Empire Hall is home to many exhibits throughout the year that put an added spotlight on historial topics. The exhibits are included with museum admission.
