wichita flight festival2011 Wichita Flight Festival 

Get ready to enjoy the "Fun of Flight" this year at the 2011 Wichita Flight Festival Aug. 20-21 at Jabara Airport. There will be free daytime air shows on Saturday and Sunday and a twilight air show/concert on Saturday night for $5. The announcement of the band for the Saturday night concert and the start of ticket sales will be announced very soon! The festival also includes a Kids Fun Zone and Fly Market made up of vendors that will be selling aviation-related merchandise and offering educational opportunities. In conjunction with the Wichita Flight Festival, the Wichita Area Technical College, 4004 N. Webb Road, will have an open house each day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Summer Classes Continue   
CityArts' classrooms have been very active the past few weeks with kids and adults cityarts paintingparticipating in summer art classes. Now it's time to start gearing up for the second half of CityArts' summer session.
 
Digital scrapbooking, stone carving and beginning colored pencil are just a few of the classes that will be starting soon for adults.
 
For kids, there are weeklong summer art camps through August, Introduction to Drawing and Teen Hand Building with Clay.

Two new exhibits have opened at CityArts. The Main Gallery is filled with large-scale photographs by Wichita attorney Mike Roach. The Upper Galleries feature abstract acrylic paintings by Wichitan Bob Bayer. Both exhibits will be on display through the end of July

American Indian Festival 

Only 11 more days before the first-ever American Indian Festival takes place at Century II Expo Hall, 225 W. Douglas. The

Pick up the July issue of SLURGE! magazine at local businesses to find a special section dedicated to the American Indian Festival.

general public is invited to come one or both days (July 9-10) and enjoy the dance, song, art and history of the American Indian people. The event is one of many around the state that pays tribute to the State of Kansas' 150th birthday this year.
It is sponsored by the Mid-America All-Indian Center.
  
Here you will find a breakdown of the schedule of events for both days and admission rates.
  
Festival highlights include:
  • Contest Powwow both days with dancers representing hundreds of tribes from around the country.
  • Horse painting demonstration Saturday afternoon with live horses from Old Cowtown Museum, followed by a related children's craft.
  • Eagle demonstration featuring "Talon" the golden eagle from the Eagle Valley Raptor Center on Saturday morning, followed by a related children's craft.
  • Youth Art Show the includes art made by American Indian students in Wichita Public Schools.
  • Fine Art Market with artists from around the region showcasing their work that will be for sale to the public.
  • Cherokee clay pottery presentation on Sunday.

Michelle Loss (standing) and Shane Konicki (right)  from the Kansas CW network will return this year for the Celebrity Pie Eating Contest. Last year they ended the contest with a friendly pie in the face.
 

Celebrating America! 
There is a lot happening around Wichita over the Fourth of July weekend, but no activities can compare to what Old Cowtown Museum has to offer you and your family this Saturday (July 2)!
  
A professional rainmaker, celebrity pie eating contest and the hugely popular Anvil Shoot are just some of what's planned for Cowtown's official "Celebrate America" event from 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. (Admission prices). And don't forget that the first 250 people through the door receive a free mini American flag!
  
The Celebrity Pie Eating Contest will take place in front of the Train Depot at 1 p.m. Come out and root for your favorite local TV and radio celebrity:

Botanica
Tuesdays on the Terrace at Botanica
Each Tuesday night, the garden mixes things up with live music, mixology and beautiful gardens. Enjoy cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages from 5:30-7:30 p.m. and enjoy the summer garden until 8 p.m. Live music begins at 5:30 p.m. Your garden admission or annual membership is your cover.
· July 5: Cosmos and Cosmopolitans, live music by Mead Street Blues Reunion (blues)
· July 12: Lilies and Electric Lemonade, live music by Amanda Lind (folk/acoustic)
· July 19: Zinnias and Zinfandel, live music by The Irish Jammers (celtic)

Mark your calendars: The public grand opening of the Downing Children's Garden will be on Saturday, July 2 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Parking will be available in Botanica's main lot. Additional parking and shuttle service will be available from the Wichita Art Museum and the public parking lot south of the Wichita Art Museum.

July 23: Family Artventure: Weird and Wacky, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
Take a look at some odd and unusual works of art that have been in storage for a long time and create your own artistic oddity. Family Artventure is free and lasts about an hour. Simply stop by the Welcome Desk to begin your Artventure.

Aug. 7: Paths to Pavement Exhibition Opening, noon
This unique exhibition looks at the scenic landscapes of the past and the urban landscapes of the present and allows visitors to stroll along the path from lush scenery to skyscrapers. Paths to Pavements encourages the viewer to discover how our surroundings are ultimately reflected in the art we create.
