City Planning Events to Mark Kansas' 150th Birthday This Year

Something as monumental as Kansas' 150th birthday can't be celebrated in one day or even one month. That's why the City of Wichita has organized a year's worth of Sesquicentennial activities and events that will take visitors down the path that was taken to get us where we are today and give us a glimpse of what lies ahead. (read more and get calendar of events

There are 20 adult and youth classes that also have February start dates -- and some even in March! colored pencils 2Day and evening classes meet once a week, and classes range from as long as 16 weeks to as short as one day.

Chances are there's a class to fit anyone's schedule. And as staff at CityArts like to say "Prior art experience is not a prerequisite, but imagination is required!"  ...  (get complete class schedule)

Valentine's Day Powwow
The 2nd annual Valentine's Day Powwow on Feb. 12 will include an entire day of activities that will be of interest to people of all ages and valentines day powwowbackgrounds. Admission is free. Donations will be accepted to help fund future powwows.

From 1 to 10 p.m. there will be intertribal dancing, audience participation dances, food venders, arts and crafts vendors and much more fun and entertainment (schedule of events).

The centerpiece of the powwow is, of course, the traditional American Indian dance demonstrations. Dancers representing tribes from across the country will be on hand. Before each dance takes place, the public will learn about its history and the meaning behind the regalia (clothing) worn by the dancers.

The Valentine's Day Powwow is part of the City's yearlong celebration to mark Kansas' 150th birthday and our state's rich heritage.

Boston Has Discovered Cowtown
Wichitans have long known that Old Cowtown Museum is an historical jewel to be treasured -- now, Bostonians know the same.

A staffer from The Boston Globe recently visited Wichita, and he was so taken with our city's art and cultural offerings that he shared his experiences with his newspapers' readers under the Jan. 2 headline "Cowtown, lattes, and public art in Wichita."

"There are world-class art museums in many cities, but nobody else has Cowtown," the reporter stated.

We couldn't agree more! Read the entire article here.

Schedule a Guided Tour

Right now during Old Cowtown Museum's winter season, visitors may take self-guided tours of the grounds on Tuesdays through Fridays or contact staff at (316) 219-1871 to arrange a guided tour. Cowtown is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

And don't forget, on Saturdays Cowtown still features volunteers in period costumes, gun fights, wagon rides and a Saloon snack bar.

Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum
Jan. 29: Kansas Day Program - "SETTLING THE SEA OF GRASS: MANY COMMUNITIES ONE STATE" by Dr. Jay Price, 2 p.m.
The Great Plains may be described as a collection of communities, existing like self-contained islands in an enormous sea of earth, grass, and sky. In many states, a major population and transportation hub serves to tie its citizens together. In Kansas, though, the population is scattered among communities that are distinct, and often quite independent from one another. Join us for a discussion on how this distinction may be our most defining feature when learning about Kansas society and culture. For more information, call (316) 265-9314 or visit wichitahistory.orgClick here for a complete calendar of events.
