2nd Downtown Walkabout Sculpture Unveiling
On Final Friday night, May 28, 2010, at 6:00 p.m. the Arts Council will cut ribbons to reveal our thirteen new sculptures. Several sculptures from our first year's project are being retained along Mosley Street.  View our new sculptures at the Intrust Arena and on Mead Street. This festive ribbon cutting will be held outside near the three Intrust Arena  sculptures, and a public reception will follow at City Arts.  Join us and share the excitement! Refreshments, balloons, music, and brief dedication remarks by the Mayor, County Commissioner, and dignitaries will kick off an evening of celebration.

At the ceremony the winners of our sculpture contest will be announced, and walking sculpture tour maps will be distributed. The Arts Council is delighted that this project has expanded from its initial five sculptures in 2009 to so many more in three downtown locations in 2010. The Arts Council is thrilled to contribute to the downtown "walkability" recommended in the city's consultant report by sponsoring the Walkabout Sculpture Project.

Helping the Arts Council with sponsorship of the Sculpture project are these fine supporters of the arts in Wichita: Fidelity Bank, Go Wichita-CVB, TCK Trust, Wichita Downtown Development, the Paul Ross Foundation, the Joan Beren Foundation, and Alan and Sharon Fearey.
New Grant for Walkabout Sculpture Project
Dora Timmerman-Bayer's Downtown Walkabout Sculpture Committee is delighted to accept a $5000. grant from Alan and Sharon Fearey.  Sharon has been involved in this committee's work since its inception, and has contributed significantly to the progress of the group.  This financial gift certainly assists with our funding efforts to sustain and expand the project.  The Arts Council originally proposed thirty sculptures for this project, and thanks to the generosity and commitment of our sponsors like the Feareys, we are well on our way to realizing that goal.

Arts Council Teens
AC TeenOur high school volunteer group, AC Teens, is taking shape under the leadership of Debra Cole and Angela Cato.  Teens from across the city and county have applied for membership, and more teens are welcome to apply.  The application form may be obtained from debra.cole@theindependentschool.com.

The ACTeens will begin their work with two projects: assistance at the Walkabout Sculpture Unveiling on May 28 at 6 p.m. at the Arena and participation in the Art Parade downtown May 29.  In the coming year these teens will enjoy a variety of art volunteer opportunities and have their own art displayed at City Arts.

If you know teens who would like to support the arts in Wichita, please suggest that they join our ACTeens.

Arts Council in Art Parade
Hoping to encourage public art events, the Arts Council is a contributing sponsor for the May 29 Supercellica Art Parade promoting a unique exhibit of stormy weather art works at the Walnut Gallery.

On Saturday, May 29 starting at 11:00 a.m. the Arts Council will join the downtown Wichita Supercellica Art Parade. Organizing the parade of art enthusiasts from across the city is Kristin Beal-DeGrandmont, and directing the Arts Council's participation is board member Jack Silvers.

Come to enjoy the spring morning fun with paraders. See the creative costumes, flying banners, bobbing balloons, and colorful floats. The more the merrier! Join us for this event.

Shakespeare Troupe at City Arts for Final Friday
AC SHakespeareNorthfield High School English teacher Bill Coleman brought his Shakespeare Troupe to City Arts to perform for the March Final Friday.  The students presented dramatic scenes from several Shakespearean plays with eloquence, poise, and effective staging. Selections from Julius Caesar, The Taming of the Shrew, Henry V, and other famous plays entertained the crowd. These skilled performers commanded attention and delighted all!  Brief solos on violin and drums accented the tone of each vignette. Student performers included Noah Trammell, Dakota Harms, Anna Hetherington, Noah Segard, Annica Snyder, Susan Elder, and Walter Elder.
New Art Garden in Sedgwick County Park
Arts Council Vice President Bob Lamkey has crafted an agreement between the Arts Council and the Sedgwick County Commission to establish an Art Garden at Sedgwick County Park. The Arts Council Board approved the agreement on April 8, and the County approved it on April 28. For this project the Arts Council will assist with selection of sculptures for the park.  We are fortunate that our county appreciates public art!
Arne Duncan Supports the Arts

According to the Wichita Eagle's editorial page on April 14, Education Secretary Arne Duncan has clearly announced his support for the arts in our nation's schools.  While addressing the Arts Education Partnership in Washington DC, Duncan said, "President Obama, the first lady and I reject the notion that the arts, history, foreign languages, geography and civics are ornamental offerings that can or should be cut from schools during a fiscal crunch. The truth is that, in the information age, a well-rounded curriculum is not a luxury, but a necessity."  Given this clearly-articulated principle, let's watch closely for the Education Secretary's support of the arts in education in months to come.

Brick Sale

Honor a family member or close friend! Commemorate an anniversary or birth!  Purchase one or more $100 bricks from the Walkabout Sculpture Committee, and we will have each brick engraved as you wish, then installed beside our Mosley Street sculptures.  Bricks sold last year have already been installed beside the sculpture closest to Larkspur Restaurant. Stroll by and see the names of our dedicated supporters.  Brick purchase forms are available at City Arts.
