Greetings!
This is kind of an early newsletter, but there are some time-sensitive items. A special reminder to anyone considering joining PHDC as a local, voting member: You must join no later than July in order to be eligible to vote on endorsements in September. You can join online now. Thanks.

UPDATE: HUNTERS POINT SHIPYARD DEVELOPMENT
| | Community meetings July 10 and August 8
6pm light dinner, 6:30pm meeting. Bayview Opera House, 3rd & Oakdale. The Navy and Regulators have released their Draft Decision for the infamous shipyard landfill on Parcel E2: the dump that burned in 2000. The Decision is to do some hot spot removal from Parcel E2's landfill but otherwise leave it intact under a cap it will construct to prevent the escape of pollution and the public's/ environment's exposure to it. Some residents of Bayview Hunters Point and District 10 are very skeptical about the capping plan and want the landfill removed. The Draft Decision may well be what's best BUT: because of the extreme importance of this decision to the Bayview Hunters Point Community and District 10, Arc Ecology has proposed, and the EPA and the Navy have agreed to allow, Arc Ecology to coordinate a completely independent peer review of their plan for Parcel E2. The goal of the July 10th meeting is to introduce the review project and the consultants, and to hear the extended community's opinions about what should be done with E2. For more info, click on the flyer, or email or call Saul Bloom, Executive Director of Arc Ecology, at 415-643-1190.

JULY 4th "Meeting:" a comedy of errors, but an ultimate success
| | 16 people showed up for activism and/or a picnic at the show. No more than 7 were ever in the same place at the same time.
On Wednesday, July 4th, we had a table set up in Dolores Park for voter registration (shown above, in progress), and for gathering signatures in support of the California DISCLOSE Act. At the table and out among the 4th of July revelers, Kate, J.R., Monisha, Greg, Peter and I registered a total of 14 voters in little over an hour. Meanwhile, DISCLOSE Act signature-gatherers Dave, Janet and Glenda managed to fill up 20 petition pages among the audience waiting for the show. Great work all around! On to the picnic blankets and the Mime Troupe's premiere of For the Greater Good, or The Last Election, a musical satire. Among the sea of blankets, Camilla, Eileen, Jane, Janet, Marc, Monisha and I found ours, had a nice picnic and enjoyed the show. Greg, Peter & Philip did not find us, but the latter two found other friends. Dave did not find us but did find Rachel, who, like Julie, never found either the table or the blanket. Thank you everyone for showing up - and I promise to do a better job with directions next time!
