Greetings!
Happy Thanksgiving! PHDC will finish this rather active year with a party instead of a meeting. There's still hell-raising to be done this month though. Read on. Joni Eisen, President Potrero Hill Democratic Club |

DECEMBER ACTIONS
| | Tues, Dec 5, 10am: Public hearing (rescheduled) on "Bring the War Dollars Home" resolution
Supervisors John Avilos and Eric Mar will introduce the Campaign for New Priorities' resolution urging the US government to reduce the military budget, end the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, and redirect savings for domestic needs. Members of PHDC, which has endorsed the resolution, and other San Franciscans are invited to testify (2-3min) how the wars impact us here in SF; this is the only chance for public testimony. For more info, email Sandra Schwartz.
Sat, Dec 10, 3pm: March with OccupySF
Do you believe that corporations are people - or that money = speech? In 2008 the top 100 Fortune 500 corporations made $600 billion in profits. Had they spent just 1% of that ($6 bil) on political campaigns, it would have been more than all candidates, parties and independent expenditure campaigns spent that year on Presidential and all Congressional elections. In the wake of the Supreme Court's 1/21/2010 Citizens United decision (said that corporations, as people, have the First Amendment right to spend unlimited money on political campaigns - and reaffirmed the notion that money equals speech), the influence of all that money will surely damage if not destroy our democracy. Join Occupy, Labor, Seniors, and Democrats in the weekly OccupySF march Dec. 10th, 3pm at the foot of Market St in anticipation of the second anniversary of Citizens United on Saturday, Jan. 21. Common Cause, DemocracyIsForPeople (Public Citizen), labor groups and others nationwide will mark that date by rallying in support of a Constitutional amendment to overturn the dastardly decision and rescue our democracy from corporate influence. Solidarity march in SF Jan 21 too. For more info, to help with logistics, sign making, etc, or just to participate in either march, contact Bob Boileau.

NEXT PHDC MEETING TUESDAY, JAN 3rd:
RANKED-CHOICE VOTING
| | Panel about Ranked-Choice a.k.a. Instant Runoff Voting in recent and future San Francisco elections
Experts on the subject will discuss its strengths and weaknesses, what alternatives there may be, and why we should - or shouldn't - pursue them. Participants include Steven Hill, who led the campaign to pass instant runoff voting in San Francisco in 2002; Tony Kelly, who ran for Supervisor under the system in 2010 and still supports it; Dominic Paris, who wants to replace it; other(s) TBA. WHEN: Tuesday, January 3, 7pmWHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St |
ALSO COMING IN JANUARY
| | AB 1148 campaign kickoff in SF, Assembly hearings in Sacramento
Eight of the nine justices said of their Citizens United decision (above) that full disclosure of who would be doing all that political spending would be a good thing - but did nothing about it. The California DISCLOSE Act would mandate disclosing who is really paying for every political ad in California - on the ad itself. It's something we can do now: Sunday, Jan. 8, 2-4pm - CA DISCLOSE Act SF Campaign kickoff with elected officials, activists and future activists at the Main library, entrance on Grove St Tuesday, Jan 10 (date tentative) - Assembly Elections Committee hearing. Pack the hearing room with supporters! Line up, say who you are and where you're from, quickly voice your support. Contact Joni (reply to this email) about carpools. Appropriations Committee hearing and Assembly floor vote come later in the month.

NOVEMBER MEETING FOLLOWUP
| | "Move Your Money" from Wall St to Main St
PHDC hosted yet another super-timely and informative discussion - this time it was about credit unions and community banks versus the big bad boys. Speakers were Matt Scullin from New Resource Bank (for people, planet and profit), Courtney Derby from San Francisco Federal Credit Union, and Glenn Gortney from San Francisco Fire Credit Union (both non-profit). Check them out by clicking on the links. The Club also passed an amendment to the Bylaws saying that to be allowed to vote on endorsements, a member must have attended 2 meetings or other Club events in the 12 months prior to the vote.
