MAY 3rd MEETING: HIGH-SPEED RAIL & MORE

ca high-speed rail

Assemblymember Cathleen Galgiani
(D-Livingston, near Merced), a leader in promoting the development of California's first-ever high-speed rail system, will speak about the project's progress and challenges.  Local aspects and impacts will be addressed. Additional speaker on this topic TBD. As always, Q&A will follow the presentation.

Further discussion of the Campaign for New Priorities is also on the agenda, with Sandra Schwartz returning to answer questions.

If time permits, we may also have a quick discussion and vote on the CA DISCLOSE Act, legislation about to move through the Assembly. The Club has already endorsed a resolution supporting the concept: the public should be informed who is really paying for political ads - clearly and unequivocally, on the ads themselves. Yours truly will answer questions.

Apropos of all this endorsing, and because of concerns raised by members at the last meeting, we will also be considering amending the Bylaws to address PHDC's endorsement process with respect to non-election issues.

WHEN: Tuesday, May 3rd, 6:45pm sign in & socialize, 7:00pm start
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St

APRIL MEETING FOLLOWUP

New Priorities, Fair Economy, Supervisor update

Sandra Schwartz, Peace Education Coordinator at the American Friends Service Committee, introduced the Campaign for New Priorities, which involves ending pointless wars, cutting the Pentagon's budget, and re-directing the funds to actual human needs. The Club voted to table a motion to endorse its principles until the May 3rd meeting, to give members more time to consider the issues.

Alysabeth Alexander, Political Action Chair of SEIU Local 1021, discussed the Fight for a Fair Economy for working families and the whole endangered middle class, in Wisconsin and closer to home.

Bill Barnes was elected to fill the position of 1st VP/Membership Chair, vacated when Isaac Bowers moved to DC.

Supervisor Malia Cohen joined us to discuss the latest at City Hall - mainly the Mid-Market Payroll Tax Exemption decision. Supervisor Cohen has graciously agreed to show up quarterly to fill us in.

All speakers' presentations included typically lively Q&A. Photos can be seen on our web site.
