January 4th meeting begins our fifth year
Issue: #25December 26, 2010
Greetings!

Happy New Year! I hope you're having a lovely holiday season. I am pleased to announce that PHDC's first event of 2011 will be a joint meeting with our D10 cohorts from the recently-formed Harvey Matthews Bayview Hunters Point Democratic Club. We'll take up topics that will be of interest to both clubs, and I will share the gavel with BVHPDC President Leah Pimentel. Hope to see you there!

TUESDAY, JAN. 4th: 2011 PLANS, SF REDISTRICTING
Two ♣s, one ♥
It's become clear over the course of the D10 Supervisor race that folks on the Hill share a lot of common concerns with people from other parts of our rapidly-changing District. So let's make an effort to stay connected.

We'll spend the first few minutes of the meeting brainstorming program ideas for the coming year (this can be useful for both clubs). What issues would you like your club to address in the near future?

The census data have been published. The SF City Charter requires the Director of Elections to determine whether the existing supervisorial districts meet the legal requirements established by federal, state and local law. If not, an Elections Task Force will convene to redraw the supervisorial district lines. With the population changes we've experienced in the Southeast Neighborhoods, what might this mean for Potrero Hill and the rest of District 10 when it comes time to redraw the lines? Now that we've gotten to know each other better during the Supervisor campaign, will they try to break us up? Three veterans of the last redistricting wars, Tony Kelly, Ron Miguel, and Espanola Jackson, will share their thoughts and experiences.

PHDC will take nominations for 2011 officers, election to be held in February. BVHPDC has some agenda items regarding voter registration and community projects.

WHEN: Tuesday, January 4th at 7PM
WHERE: Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro @ Southern Hts

DECEMBER MEETING FOLLOWUP
Malia Cohen at PHDC RCV discussion and new Supervisor filled up the agenda
Thought the first part of the meeting would be taken up with processing the results of the November election - but we got no farther than ranked-choice voting (feelings ran high!).

Supervisor-elect Malia Cohen (shown at right in photo by Linda Post) carried the rest of the well-attended meeting extremely capably despite a serious case of laryngitis, talking and answering questions at length. Many people signed up to volunteer in her office - way to get involved!

The circular seating arrangement we've employed for the past two meetings seems to be popular; we'll keep it for the foreseeable future.

Thanks to everyone who brought items to donate the SF Food Bank!
