Issue: #21   August 27, 2010
Greetings!

In case you've forgotten, the super-hot race for D10 Supervisor is not the only thing on the November 2nd ballot. In fact, there's so much more that we have to hold two endorsement meetings to cover it all. Read on.

Joni Eisen, President
Potrero Hill Democratic Club

ENDORSEMENT MEETINGS SEPTEMBER 7th & 14th
9/7 mostly candidates; 9/14 ballot measures

TUESDAY, SEPT 7 @ 7PM
. Candidates and some state propositions. California Propositions 23, 25, and 26 are fairly obvious, especially when you consider some of the funding sources (see the incredibly informative Ballotpedia for an overview of all nine state ballot measures). We will also cover Props 21 and 24.

Candidates in the nonpartisan races for Board of Education, Community College Board, and Assessor-Recorder who responded to our request to appear will speak briefly and answer questions. The first two groups will also have filled out brief questionnaires, due August 30, which will be posted Aug 31 so that you will have a week to look at them. Watch for an email with the link.

Candidates for Supervisor who accepted our invitation earlier this month may be seen on Joseph Schaller's video of the forums. They and others filled out questionnaires, which will also be available online by August 31. You might want to check out Linda Post's videos of candidates at the August 24 meet-and-greet at Velma's (an event, llike PHDC's forums, to which all candidates were invited). All qualified candidates and their web sites are listed here.

TUESDAY, SEPT 14 @ 6:30PM. Remaining state and all 15 local ballot measures, speakers pro and con.

NOTES ABOUT THE ENDORSEMENT PROCESS ITSELF
60% of votes cast are required for endorsement

Regular members in good standing (new members must have joined at least 60 days before voting) will vote on all races that will appear on the Nov 2nd ballot. For state and federal partisan races, because we are a club chartered by the Democratic Party, only the Democratic candidate or "No Endorsement" will be the choices. Nonpartisan races will include all qualified candidates. All candidates, and 5 state propositions, will be on your Sept 7th endorsement ballot. The Secretary of State's web site has a list of all statewide candidates.

Just as we will in the election, we will use ranked-choice voting when we vote for Supervisor. First, second and third choices are permitted. We count them by hand - fun! Ranked-choice voting can only be used when there are multiple candidates running for one seat.

Absentee ballots, but not proxies, are allowed and will be available at least a week before each meeting (email to request one). If you choose to mail or deliver the sealed ballot to 1459 - 18th St, Box 152, it must arrive by 5PM September 7th. You may also deliver your sealed ballot to 592 Pennsylvania (slide it under the gate) - before 4PM on Sept 7. All ballots received before or during the meeting will be counted immediately after the meeting.

Note: There are a couple of nonpartisan runoff races in which we already endorsed one of the candidates before the June primary, using ranked-choice voting, so those endorsements would carry over: Michael Nava for Superior Court Judge, and Tom Torlakson for Superintendent of Education.

OCTOBER 16th: VOTER REGISTRATION & CLUB OUTREACH at the POTRERO HILL FESTIVAL

The Club will have a table from 11AM to 4PM, at the 20th Annual Potrero Hill Festival. This year, thanks to the generosity of our "Shop Local" silent auction donors (see sidebar above), PHDC is able to be a sponsor of the Festival, all proceeds of which benefit the Neighborhood House.

Please sign up for an hour or two to register voters, distribute our endorsement list, sell t-shirts and in general be an ambassador for your neighborhood Dem Club! Email Monisha if you can help out. Thanks.
