Issue: #16 March 29, 2010
Greetings!

Our endorsement meeting for the rest of the June 8th ballot is upon us. For the first time, our club will hear from candidates for the SF County Democratic Central Committee. But not all of them (see below). There's a lot to consider; please note the earlier start time. Thanks.

Joni Eisen, President
Potrero Hill Democratic Club

APRIL 6th ENDORSEMENT MEETING
SF DCCC, STATEWIDE OFFICES, LOCAL & STATE PROPOSITIONS

On the agenda, not at all necessarily in this order:

1.  Candidates for Democratic County Central Committee, District 13. This race is usually won on name recognition alone. To mitigate that situation as far as our endorsement process is concerned, we have invited only the 18 candidates who have not been elected to public office before (all 30 names will be on the endorsement ballot).

Before the candidates appear, District 12 DCCC member Hene Kelly and former District 13 member Bill Barnes will talk briefly about the form and function of the Committee.

2. We have invited major Democratic Primary candidates for Lieutenant Governor (Janice Hahn, Gavin Newsom) and Insurance Commissioner (Hector De La Torre, Dave Jones) and major nonpartisan candidates for Superintendent of Public instruction (Larry Aceves, Gloria Romero, Tom Torlakson). All the campaigns have responded, but it is unclear at this time who exactly will be there. Stay tuned. Here's a list of all the statewide candidates.

3. There will be speakers on State Propositions:
Prop 13, Limits on property tax assessment for seismic retrofitting. Planning Commission President Ron Miguel will give an impartial overview.
Prop 14, Open primary elections ("top two"). Yes - TBA. No - Senator Leland Yee
Prop 16, Two-thirds voter approval requirement for local electricity providers. Yes - already brought to you by the $25 to $35 million PG&E alone is spending.  No - John Rizzo of the Sierra Club.
Prop 17, Auto insurance pricing based partly on driver's history of coverage. Yes - declined to appear. No -  Senator Leland Yee.

4. The seven local ballot measures A through G (find titles, summaries, texts by clicking on the link) will be discussed by Board of Supervisors President David Chiu.

5. Club business, discussion and voting. Endorsement requires a 60% vote.

WHERE:  Potrero Hill Neighborhood House, 953 De Haro St @ Southern Heights
WHEN:  Tuesday, April 6th, at 6:30PM. NOTE EARLIER START.

DEADLINE LOOMS: SIGN THE LAKOFF PETITION NOW if you haven't already

Signatures are due in early April to qualify the California Democracy Act for the November ballot: Let the majority, not the two-thirds now required, vote to pass legislation on budget and revenue.  Now you can print your own individual petition, sign and mail it in! And tell all your California friends to do the same. Click here for instructions and petition. PHDC-endorsed.

MARCH MEETING FOLLOWUP: JUDICIAL CANDIDATES, INDIA BASIN, et al.
Seven would-be judges and one potentially great shoreline

Kristine Enea, president of India Basin Neighborhood Association, talked about its Shoreline Community Vision, illustrated on their web site. Technical difficulties precluded a slide show at the meeting.

There were reps from Kamala Harris and Chris Kelly's campaigns for Attorney General. After an introductory talk by City Attorney Dennis Herrera, we held a judicial forum consisting of seven strong and articulate candidates for the two contested seats on San Francisco Superior Court: Linda Colfax, Harry Dorfman, Roderick McLeod, Robert Retana for Seat 6; Dan Dean, Michael Nava, and incumbent Richard Ulmer for Seat 15.  DeWitt Lacy introduced the candidates, and Bill Barnes moderated. PHDC endorsements so far for the June election:
Proposition 15 (the California Fair Elections Act): YES
Attorney General: Kamala Harris
Superior Court Judge, Seat 15: Michael Nava
Superior Court Judge, Seat 6: No position
