Restoring majority rule: it's time. Also: District 10 race
Sonoma State philosophy professor Teed Rockwell explained why the current 2/3 rule to enact bugdet and/or revenue legislation is not totally working for California. PHDC voted to endorse the California Democracy Act - "All legislative actions on revenue and budget must be determined by a majority vote." Ellis Goldberg signed up Club members as petition circulators that night. To get petitions for friends to sign, or otherwise join the campaign, email Chandra, San Francisco campaign chair. The field of candidates for Supervisor of District 10 continues to grow. In January, social worker Geoffrea Morris became the tenth such hopeful to introduce herself to PHDC members and guests. Stay tuned - more to come. Later in the year we'll present at least one candidate forum. For audio of all candidate introductions to date, scroll down the website homepage. |
NEXT MEETING, FEBRUARY 2nd: FULL AGENDA

Constitutional Convention; Starr King; District 10 candidates; Bylaws amendment; officer elections; etc.
We continue the conversation about how to fix our state government, with Alonso Gonzalez of Repair California discussing calling a limited Constitutional Convention, focused only on issues of governance.
Starr King Openspace, a serpentine grassland habitat which literally belongs to all the residents of Potrero Hill, has seen exciting changes recently both in the structure of the nonprofit and in the stewardship of the land. New Board members will fill us in on these developments.
Two or three more candidates for Supervisor of District 10 will appear to tell us briefly who they are and why they are running.
Election of Officers. After voting takes place to amend the Bylaws re: duties of Secretary and Webmaster, nominations will continue to be taken through the first half of the meeting.
The meeting will conclude with some intriguing announcements. See you there!

Emergency health care rally TOMORROW; more diverse applicants needed for new Redistricting Commission
Instead
of getting the wrong message and backing down after last week's election in Massachusetts, Democrats in Washington
need to show some backbone and deliver on the promises that got them elected, starting with
the passage of real health care reform. MoveOn.org - sponsored rally, 6PM in front of Sen. Feinstein's office. The Citizens Redistricting Commission, created by the 2008 passage of state Proposition 11, will be appointed after the application process closes
Feb. 12. Already over 5,800 individuals
have applied, but people of color as a group make up less than 18% of
the applicants, and women make up less than 25%. Obviously, a diverse applicant pool ensures a diverse commission, and anyone can apply. To find out more, attend a Redistricting Application Workshop Feb. 4th (scroll down) in SF, sponsored by the Asian Law Caucus.
