The Physician and Philanthropist: One in Service for Humanity!
As I peruse my work schedule for the coming month posted down the hallway, a bright spot stands out amidst the standard office, procedure and call ritual. "Yes!" I say loud enough for my employees to hear, celebrating the day on the calendar where I have set aside an afternoon to volunteer as a physician at the St. Vincent de Paul Clinic. While this may sound a bit exaggerated, I truly look forward to the opportunity to use my skills and experiences as a doctor in service to others in need, on my own volition with no expectation of monetary reward. Are you a philanthropist too?

Over the next week, MCMS members will receive an invoice through the mail for your 2013 dues. Renewing your membership is beneficial to you for many reasons, a few of which are listed below:
- Maricopa County Medical Society is more active and vocal than ever - monitoring change, meeting members' needs, serving as a physician advocate, and working to improve the quality of health in Maricopa County.
- With seven new committees energized and engaged in supporting physicians and the mission of MCMS, you can clearly see that this is your Society in transition.
- MCMS believes in social medicine, not socialized medicine.
- MCMS wants to give back to the community and be an integral part of every aspect of medicine in Maricopa County through its own endeavors or by partnerships.
- Strength in numbers - we need you to remain members so we may tip the scales in favor of physicians and to preserve the profession of medicine.
Payment can be submitted through the Web site - www.mcmsonline.com/renewal; by calling 602-252-2015; or mail your invoice and check to: Maricopa County Medical Society, 326 E. Coronado Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85004.

Six in Ten Physicians Would Quit Today
| | |
Doctors are working less, seeing fewer patients, and many would quit if they could, a sweeping survey of 13,575 physicians from across the nation shows.
The survey, A Survey of America's Physicians: Practice Patterns and Perspectives, was commissioned by The Physicians Foundation. It is the latest, and perhaps the largest and most comprehensive of a number of surveys that have identified wide, deep and increasing discontent among the nation's physicians regardless of their age, gender, specialty, location, or employment status.
"It is downbeat and it is a concern. What we are documenting here is a trend and the trend is pretty solid," Walker Ray, MD, vice president of the nonprofit foundation, told HealthLeaders Media.
"Physicians feel powerless. They don't feel like their voices are being heard. They don't feel like they were heard on the run up to healthcare reform and they don't feel like they're being heard now."

Take "Healthcare 101" and See the Doctor
| | What if payers required all health consumers to take a one-day "Healthcare 101" class every five years? Especially when they're eligible for Medicare, the age when the need for healthcare services dramatically increases.
Qualified instructors would explain the importance of patients asking questions about their care, and who should answer them. Students would learn about how to measure quality of care, and where to check for it. They'd learn a few current concepts, like accountable care, incentive payment, discharge planning, hospital-acquired harm, and evidence-based medicine.
They'd see the difference between a hospital marketing campaign and what's right for them.
Yes, there would be a test. And they'd have to pass. And their providers could see their scores.
