New Medical Care Networks Show Savings
| | | A study, which is being published in The Journal of the American Medical Association, found that a predecessor to accountable care organizations achieved particular savings in caring for patients eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. In the predecessor program, a Medicare experiment that ran from 2005 to 2010, 10 doctors groups from around the country received bonus payments, if they met quality targets and achieved lower cost growth compared with Medicare spending on other patients in their region. The study, conducted by researchers from the Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy and Clinical Practice, found that the growth in spending per "dual eligible" patient slowed by $532 a year, or five percent, after doctors groups joined the demonstration program.

Six Tips for Marketing a Practice Outside Social Media
| | Online marketing strategies are important, but experts on marketing medical practices say it takes more than a virtual presence to persuade people to visit a particular physician and tell friends and family to do the same. Practices may have to use some good, old-fashioned paper, metal or plastic to get out various messages.
"Patients are seeing 10,000 messages a day," said Steven V. Dubin, president of PR Works in Kingston, Mass., who works with medical practices "If you want yours to break through the clutter, you need to make sure it's high-impact and in different forms."

IT Critical to New Health Learning System
| | | For America to consistently deliver reliable performance and improve patient outcomes, providers must apply computing capabilities and analytical tools that allow clinicians to share real-time insights from routine patient care. In short, the entire U.S. healthcare system must transform itself into a continuous learning machine that drives efficiency and curbs costs, a new study released by the Institute of Medicine (IOM) concludes. Best Care at Lower Cost: The Path to Continuously Learning Health Care in America says the healthcare industry, unlike the banking, airline, and auto industries, lags far behind in its ability to establish the practices and procedures that raise its performance level.

Detecting Deception: How to Handle a Malingering Patient
| | Some medical experts say the number of patients who exaggerate illnesses seems to be rising. Doctors can help identify such behavior.
Ronald Schouten, MD, knew immediately that something was strange about the patient who lurched oddly into his exam room and collapsed into a chair. The man, who complained of a head injury, appeared to understand Dr. Schouten's words, but the patient's voice was garbled and his mannerisms were overdramatic.

ICD-10 Transition Information Providers and Payers Need to Share
| | |
The compliance deadline for ICD-10 is now October 1, 2014. With two years to complete ICD-10 implementation, providers and payers will need to communicate regularly to help ensure a smooth transition. To keep transition activities on track, providers and payers should:
1. Engage in an Open Dialogue
Once you have established an ICD-10 Project Team or designated a representative to oversee transition activities, reach out to the organizations you coordinate with to inform them of your implementation plans. Regardless of your organization's size or resources, it is important to make sure you are regularly communicating with external partners about transition plans. If you have not already done so, make sure to:
- Communicate the current status of your organization's ICD-10 implementation efforts. As payers and providers may be at different stages of implementation, it is important to reach out to one another to share your organization's current focus.
