And Now For Something Completely Different...
A Family in China
Dr. Mills
Michael R. Mills,
MD, MPH
As I temporarily step down from this bully pulpit where I've shared your local county Medical Society's renewed efforts to improve and enhance physician solidarity and develop sustainable programs promoting education, collegiality, mentorship, public health, and philanthropy; all the while sounding the call to action for every doctor to support and defend our noble profession, I am excited to share a valuable reaffirmation of the source that supports my professional life as healer and caregiver: my talented and loving wife and three amazing children.

Leaving my stethoscope on the desk for the longest time since graduating from medical school, this family adventure sets off to a far-away land with the promise of returning home with a treasure chest of great memories, lots of laughter promoting family closeness, and maybe even a few life lessons. While this month's editorial may just be a chance to share experiences and some great photos, I for one know that it's a hard balancing act between our demanding and chaotic professional careers and our lives outside of the office, hospital and operative room with those who are the most important: our family, friends and loved ones.

The Arizona Medical Board Now Videotapes Public Meetings

Beginning with its April 2012 meeting, the Arizona Medical Board has video recorded its public meetings, and effective with the August 1, 2012, meeting, they are also live-streamed so that members of the public can view them in real time from any personal computer connected to the Internet. Previously recorded meetings will be available on-line and are indexed so that members of the public can view specific cases or agenda items. The Board minutes will continue to be posted on the Web site - www.azmd.gov - as well to enhance the transparency of Board proceedings and deliberations.

To view live or previously recorded meetings, visit the Web site and click on Media Center/ Board Meeting Webcast.

The Arizona Regulatory Board of Physician Assistants has also voted to begin videotaping their meetings; the enhancement is in the implementation process.

For more information visit www.azmd.gov

View Senate Bill 1188, which required the Arizona Medical Board to audio record meetings in addition to other changes.

Nearly Half of US Doctors Struggle with Burnout: Study

Job burnout strikes doctors more often than it does other employed people in the United States, according to a national survey that included more than 7,000 doctors.

More than four in 10 U.S. physicians said they were emotionally exhausted or felt a high degree of cynicism, or "depersonalization," toward their patients, said researchers whose findings appeared in the Archives of Internal Medicine.

"The high rate of burnout has consequences not only for the individual physicians, but also for the patients they are caring for," said Tait Shanafelt of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who led the research.

Physicians Resist States' Interference in Practice of Medicine
An organization representing internists has drafted principles designed to protect the physician-patient relationship when lawmakers draft measures regulating healthcare.

Some states have adopted statutes interfering with the care provided by doctors, the American College of Physicians said in its "Statement of Principles on the Role of Governments in Regulating the Patient-Physician Relationship." Some laws and regulations require doctors to offer care that is not supported by evidence-based guidelines.

"Several states have passed or are in the process of passing laws that are going after the conversation between patients and physicians," said ACP President David L. Bronson, MD. "That is protected territory."

Doctor Shortage May Swell To 130,000 With Cap
With a shortage of doctors in the U.S. already and millions of new patients set to gain coverage under President Barack Obama's healthcare overhaul, American medical schools are struggling to close the gap.

One major reason: The residency programs to train new doctors are largely paid for by the federal government, and the number of students accepted into such programs has been capped at the same level for 15 years. Medical schools are holding back on further expansion because the number of applicants for residencies already exceeds the available positions, according to the National Resident Matching Program, a 60-year-old Washington-based nonprofit that oversees the program.
