What it Means to Be a Doctor and Coming Together
Guest Editorial, by Paul M. Steingard, DO

Introduction by Michael R. Mills, MD, MPH - President

Derived from Odysseus's trusted counselor in Greek mythology,

Dr. Steingard
Paul Steingard, DO

Mentor, in whose guise Athena became the guardian and teacher of Telemachus, our role and responsibility to share our knowledge with those entering the profession of medicine is clearly delineated in the Hippocratic Oath. While some in our ranks have chosen a career in medical education, in whose continued service we should support in earnest, all physicians irrespective of your academic training, employment model, or specialty serve as examples through your professional and personal activities of what it means to be a physician to future and fellow physicians, others in our healthcare family, and our community as a whole.

PQRS Update

As part of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) starting in 2015, if you are a practicing physician or part of a group practice that participates in Medicare, reimbursement for services will be linked to the satisfactory reporting of quality measures through the Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS).

Here's how it works.

For the period January 1 through December 31, 2013, all physicians will report on at least three quality measures that are specific to the specialty in which they practice. The data submitted (either through your EHR, a registry in which you participate, or claims-based) will be used to determine whether a 1.5 percent downward payment adjustment will be applied if eligible professionals do not satisfactorily submit data on PQRS quality measures. The adjustment applies to covered professional services furnished by an eligible professional or group practice. In 2015 and subsequent years, all reporting will be conducted through your EHR as outlined in the ACA. To avoid the 2015 adjustment penalty, an eligible professional must begin submitting PQRS measures in 2013.

For more information or for FREE help with PQRS submission - including prevention and cardiac measures - contact Padma Taggarse (from Health Services Advisory Group, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Arizona) at ptaggarse@hsag.com, or visit  www.hsag.com/azphysicianoffice/pqrs.aspx for a list of events, resources, and helpful tools.

Recent studies indicate that a growing number of physicians are considering employed positions over private practices, which have been the cornerstone of American medicine. Traditionally, 75% of physicians have been in office-based, independent practice situations.

To find out more about the key issues causing physicians to be open to this employment mode, plus more, read the full article...
Emailing Patients: Profitable? Yes - Here's How
For most Americans, e-mail is as indispensable as the telephone. But according to a 2010 national survey conducted by the Center for Studying Health System Change (CSHSC), only 6.7% of office-based physicians routinely e-mail with patients.

Those who don't want to e-mail with patients insist that it's a black hole that sucks time and energy and creates an unending monster. Others swear that it has made their workday more efficient and profitable and that it's possible to tackle and neutralize most of the downsides that come with patient e-mail communications.

Many doctors don't know why their practices aren't doing well and are forced to guess what's wrong. They are so busy with day-to-day responsibilities that they do not have time to monitor all aspects of their business, yet they need to be confident that they are on track for success.

Instead of working in the dark, you can ensure your success by tracking five critical benchmarks that will give you peace of mind that your practice is on target.
