MCMS Member Dr. Richard Heuser Performs First OP PCI
|
|
 | |
Richard Heuser, MD
|
St. Luke's Medical Center recently announced that it performed the first percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) on an outpatient basis via the radial approach. The radial approach is a cardiac catheterization procedure performed through the patient's wrist, which has proven to be safer and more comfortable for patients, enables patients to recover faster and has better long-term results than traditional methods, according to recent studies. The radial approach, combined with the use of a special anti-platelet blood thinner, were utilized to achieve this cardiac first in Phoenix.
MCMS Member Richard Heuser, MD, FACC, FACP, FESC, FSCAI, Chief of Cardiology at St. Luke's Medical Center and in practice with the Phoenix Heart Center, a Physician Group of Arizona, Inc., practice, performed the first outpatient PCI on Joe Huske, 80, of Fountain Hills, Arizona. Huske had four previous heart procedures in which the traditional, or groin, approach was used. For him, the outpatient procedure was a welcomed change. Read more...

The Best Ways to Market Your Practice at Local Events
|
| For some medical practices, exhibiting at a summer festival, health fair or business expo can be a chance to say hello to the community - and get new patients.
The key, medical marketing experts say, is to choose the right event, think about how to engage attendees and set realistic expectations about what benefits will be gained. The events can be a lot of fun but take creativity to make them work. Read more...

Stressed Physicians Reluctant to Seek Support
|
| Nearly 80% of physicians at an academic medical center said they experienced a personal crisis within the past year, yet most said they would not seek support from physician-health services or employee-assistance programs.
The 108 surgeons, anesthesiologists and emergency physicians said they experienced a wide range of stressful events, such as serious illnesses or deaths in their families and severe adverse events in their patients. But most they said they were unlikely to turn to institutional sources of support, with 40% saying they would be willing to consult physician-health services and 29% open to using employee-assistance programs. About a third of the doctors had never even heard of these services, said an Archives of Surgery study published in March.
The reason offered most frequently for not getting help was lack of time, with 90% of the physicians surveyed at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston citing it. About 70% feared a lack of confidentiality, negative impact on their careers or the stigma of mental illness. Nearly half feared legal consequences or thought "using services means I am weak." Physician Interest in Online CME is Strong
|
| There is a demand among physicians for continuing medical education training that can be accessed on the go.
A survey by ON24 and MedData Group found that 84% of physicians would prefer attending CME events online. Among the benefits physicians expect from Web-based CME is the ability to view the content "on demand" while avoiding the hassles and costs of traveling.
ON24, a virtual communication technology vendor with headquarters in San Francisco, and MedData Group, an interactive content and database marketing services company based in Topsfield, MA., surveyed 971 physicians across a variety of specialties about their digital behaviors. The survey found that physicians are "more mobile than ever before," and that is impacting the way they want to access educational materials.
"We're looking at a significant change in how doctors say they use and want to use virtual technology," said Bill Reinstein, president and CEO of MedData Group. "The results of the survey point to wider adoption and more meaningful use of online training anytime, anywhere." Read more...

Arizona Funding to Restore Help for Mentally Ill
| | |
New state funding for Arizonans with serious mental illnesses returns some of the services they lost two years ago and paves the way for a temporary agreement in a decades-old class-action lawsuit.
The budget for the fiscal year that begins July 1, which Gov. Jan Brewer signed May 7, includes $38.7 million to restore housing, counseling and other services to people with serious mental illnesses who don't qualify for Medicaid.
That's less than the roughly $50 million cut in 2010, and the two-year deal doesn't end the 30-year-old court case. But the money represents a significant turnaround in a lengthy legal battle over treatment of some of the state's most vulnerable residents. Read more...
