The Past, the Present and the Future or, the Good, the Bad and the Ugly

By: Nathan Laufer, MD
Nathan Laufer, MD
MCMS President

This is my last editorial as president of MCMS. The year has gone by very quickly. The practice of medicine continues to change and evolve at a rapid pace as well. I would like to summarize my past editorials, discuss our present situation with ACO's and medical practice in general, and look ahead to the future of healthcare delivery.

This past year, I covered such topics as the hospital peer review process concluding with the AMA guidelines for fair and impartial peer review. I discussed issues surrounding continuity of care, which will become increasingly important as we move more and more towards shift work.

In the April and May issues [of Round-up Magazine], I reviewed the history of organized medicine and the government interference that weakened the AMA. Although collective bargaining is illegal in the private sector, few employed physicians are aware that they can legally engage in collective negotiations with their employers. This may be a future opportunity for the Medical Society in order to engage these physicians. Read More...

Nathan Laufer, MD to speak at McGill Alumni Association of Arizona Event; Topic: The Future of Healthcare in Arizona

On December 4, join McGill Alumni for a presentation on the future of healthcare in Arizona, delivered by two McGill graduates playing key roles in its evolution: Dr. Nathan Laufer and Dr. Robert Orford.

Dr. Laufer is Program Director, Interventional Cardiology Fellowship at Phoenix's Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center; is a past Coronary Care Unit Director at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center; and former Chairman of Cardiology at Banner Estrella Medical Center. He is the president of the Maricopa County Medical Society and the Founder and Medical Director of the Heart and Vascular Center of Arizona.

Dr. Orford presently serves as a consultant and as President of the Arizona Medical Association, and is the former Chair of the Division of Preventive, Occupational and Aerospace Medicine at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, as well as the former Deputy Minister of Community and Occupational Health in Alberta.

You won't want to miss what promises to be a thought-provoking discussion on what lies ahead for patients and practitioners in Arizona, and what these changes may mean. And as an added bonus, the event will be held at Arizona State University's beautiful Old Main building, providing an opportunity to meet other McGill alumni, parents and friends.  Read More...

CDC to Track Use of Antibiotics in Hospitals

The CDC has launched a new electronic tool to monitor antibiotic use in hospitals to help facilities curb overuse of the drugs.

The new tracking tool is part of the CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network, a Web-based surveillance system that uses data from 4,800 hospitals to track infections. Until now, the CDC has tracked antibiotic use in doctors' offices, but not in hospitals.

Overuse and misuse of antibiotics can lead to antibiotic resistance, allergic reactions, and even increased risk for Clostridium difficile, a potentially deadly infection that causes diarrhea, the CDC said.

A recent study even suggested antibiotic-resistant "superbugs" born in hospitals may enter the wider environment through the facilities' sewers. Read More...

Donald Berwick Resigns as Head of CMS, Tavenner to Replace

Donald Berwick, MD has resigned as administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), effective December 2, after a short tumultuous term as President Barrack Obama's point person for healthcare reform.

Dr. Berwick will have served only 17 months in the post. He was denied Senate confirmation by Republicans, who branded the pediatrician an advocate of healthcare rationing. Dr. Berwick denied that charge, countering that the best way to cut costs is to improve the quality of care.

The president nominated Dr. Berwick, who had headed the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, for the CMS post in April 2010 to the applause of such diverse groups such as the American College of Physicians, AARP, Walmart, and Consumers Union. However, in July 2010, when Obama found that GOP opponents were blocking the path to Senate confirmation, he installed Dr. Berwick as CMS administrator through a "pocket" appointment while the Senate was in recess. The special appointment is set to expire by law at the end of 2011. Dr. Berwick was renominated in January 2011, but he still faced granite opposition from Senate Republicans. His resignation, therefore, comes as no surprise. Read More...
